Key Points

CJNG leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes was reportedly killed during a February 2026 raid in Mexico

Investigators are examining possible cryptocurrency assets linked to cartel finances

Past government operations show billions of dollars in Bitcoin have been seized from criminal networks

Washington: Investigators are examining potential cryptocurrency assets linked to the financial network of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), following reports of his death earlier this year during a security operation in Mexico.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the scale of any digital assets tied to the cartel leader. However, security analysts say criminal organizations increasingly use cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin to move and store wealth beyond traditional banking systems.

CJNG is widely considered one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world, with operations spanning North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Growing Use of Cryptocurrency by Criminal Networks

Law enforcement agencies say organized crime groups have increasingly turned to cryptocurrency for financial transactions.

According to blockchain analytics firms including Chainalysis, cryptocurrency has been used in ransomware payments, fraud schemes, and narcotics trafficking operations.

Bitcoin remains the most widely used digital asset for these activities because it can be transferred globally without relying on banks or traditional financial intermediaries.

Despite that advantage, investigators note that blockchain transactions leave permanent records, which often allows authorities to trace funds over time.

Major Bitcoin Seizures in Criminal Cases

Several major law enforcement actions over the past decade have demonstrated how authorities can eventually track and seize cryptocurrency connected to criminal activity.

Among the largest confirmed seizures:

• Silk Road case (2021): U.S. authorities seized approximately 50,676 Bitcoin, valued at about $3.36 billion at the time, from an individual linked to the dark web marketplace.

• Bitfinex hack recovery (2022): The U.S. Department of Justice recovered roughly 94,643 Bitcoin, valued at about $3.6 billion, connected to the 2016 cryptocurrency exchange hack.

• Prince Group seizure (2025): Authorities seized around 127,000 Bitcoin, worth approximately $15 billion, linked to a massive international scam network operating from Southeast Asia.

These operations highlight the increasing role of cryptocurrency investigations in global law enforcement.

Claims About Massive Cartel Bitcoin Holdings

Following reports of El Mencho’s death, some online posts claimed that authorities had seized as much as $10 billion worth of Bitcoin linked to the cartel leader.

However, officials have not confirmed such a seizure.

Experts caution that large claims circulating on social media often exaggerate or misinterpret ongoing financial investigations.

“If such an amount were confirmed, it would represent one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures ever recorded,” said a blockchain security analyst who studies organized crime financing.

Digital Assets and Cartel Finances

Cartels traditionally relied on cash smuggling and offshore financial networks to move profits from drug trafficking.

In recent years, investigators say some criminal organizations have begun experimenting with cryptocurrency storage systems, including cold wallets and multi-signature accounts designed to protect large holdings.

These technologies can complicate enforcement efforts, though blockchain tracing tools have also improved significantly.

Authorities say financial investigations into cartel networks are ongoing, and any confirmed digital asset seizures would likely be handled through federal forfeiture procedures.

Ohio State University President Ted Carter resigned after revealing an inappropriate relationship involving someone seeking public resources for a private business, according to university officials.

Columbus, Ohio: Ohio State University President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. has resigned from his position after disclosing an inappropriate relationship involving someone seeking public resources to support a private business.

The university confirmed that Carter informed the Board of Trustees about the relationship before a special executive session held over the weekend. Following the disclosure, Carter offered to step down and the board accepted his resignation.

In a letter dated March 8, Board of Trustees Chair John W. Zeiger wrote that the board was surprised and disappointed by the situation but respected Carter’s decision to resign and cooperate with the leadership transition.

“The Board was surprised and disappointed to learn of this matter and takes the situation and its potential impact on the university very seriously,” Zeiger wrote in the letter accepting Carter’s resignation.

The university said Carter acknowledged that he had allowed inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership and chose to resign for personal reasons.

Leadership Tenure at Ohio State

Carter began serving as Ohio State’s 17th president on January 1, 2024. His contract had been scheduled to run through December 31, 2028.

During his time in office, university officials credited him with launching several major initiatives including the Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan, new scholarship programs, and investments across multiple academic colleges.

Trustees had previously praised Carter for his leadership and approved a 4.5 percent merit raise, increasing his base salary to approximately $1.19 million along with a performance bonus valued at roughly $398,000.

Before joining Ohio State, Carter served as president of the University of Nebraska system, overseeing four campuses and nearly 70,000 students and employees.

Military Background and Career

Prior to his academic leadership roles, Carter spent most of his career in the United States Navy.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and the Navy Fighter Weapons School, commonly known as Top Gun. Carter also studied at the Navy Nuclear Power School, the U.S. Air Force Air War College, the Naval War College, and the Armed Forces Staff College.

Carter later served as superintendent of the Naval Academy, becoming the longest continuously serving leader of the institution since the Civil War. He spent much of his professional career in the United States Navy, eventually rising to the rank of Vice Admiral. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 and later completed the Navy Fighter Weapons School, widely known as Top Gun. Carter served as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy from 2014 to 2019 and commanded several naval aviation and carrier operations during his decades-long military career.

Growing tensions in the Middle East and rising global bond yields could trigger renewed volatility in global markets, with analysts warning that energy shocks and tightening liquidity may pressure equities and risk assets.

Breaking Update: Oil Surges Above $116

Global oil markets moved sharply higher in the past several hours as Brent crude prices surged to $116 per barrel, marking one of the fastest price spikes since the escalation of tensions involving Iran in the Gulf region.

Market data shows Brent rising more than 25 percent in a short period, as traders reacted to growing fears that the conflict could disrupt shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint responsible for roughly 20 percent of global oil supply.

Energy traders say the speed of the move reflects rising war-risk premiums in the oil market.

“When geopolitical tensions threaten physical supply routes, markets tend to reprice very quickly,” said a Gulf-based energy analyst. “The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most sensitive energy corridors in the world.”

The spike has also triggered renewed volatility in global financial markets, with investors closely watching energy costs, shipping insurance rates, and potential supply disruptions across the Gulf.

Financial analysts are warning that global markets could face a period of heightened volatility as several major economic and geopolitical stress signals begin to converge at the same time.

Market observers say the next phase of market movement may depend heavily on developments surrounding the escalating confrontation between Iran and the United States and the stability of global energy supply routes.

At the center of the concern is the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping corridor linking the Persian Gulf to global energy markets.

Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes through the waterway each day. Any disruption to tanker traffic in this region could have immediate consequences for oil prices, shipping costs, and broader financial markets.

Energy analysts say oil markets react quickly to geopolitical shocks. When oil prices rise sharply, the effects ripple through the global economy.

Higher fuel costs increase transportation expenses, raise production costs for manufacturers, and place additional pressure on household spending.

“Energy markets tend to react immediately to geopolitical disruptions,” said a Gulf-based commodities strategist. “If shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slows even temporarily, oil prices could move very quickly.”

These effects can quickly translate into renewed inflation pressure.

Why Energy Shocks Affect Financial Markets

Historically, sudden spikes in oil prices have coincided with major periods of market stress.

The 1973 oil crisis, the 1990 Gulf War, and the commodity surge leading up to the 2008 financial crisis each triggered sharp increases in energy prices that placed significant strain on global economies.

When energy costs surge, central banks often face a difficult trade-off.

Inflation pressure limits their ability to cut interest rates to support economic growth. At the same time, tighter monetary conditions can reduce liquidity across financial markets.

Reduced liquidity tends to increase volatility in equities and other risk-sensitive assets.

Japan’s Bond Market Adds Another Layer of Risk

A second factor drawing attention from global investors involves developments in Japan’s financial system.

Japan has historically played a major role in supporting global liquidity because its investors hold a large share of international financial assets.

Japanese institutions collectively hold more than $1 trillion in US Treasury securities, making Japan one of the largest foreign lenders to the United States.

For decades, Japan maintained extremely low interest rates through a policy known as yield curve control, which kept domestic bond yields suppressed.

That environment encouraged Japanese investors to deploy capital abroad into US bonds, global equities, and other assets.

However, rising Japanese bond yields and a weakening yen are now raising the possibility that domestic investments could become more attractive.

If Japanese investors begin shifting capital back into domestic bonds, global markets could lose a significant source of liquidity that has supported asset prices for years.

The Structural Liquidity Issue

Many economists say the global financial system has become increasingly dependent on abundant liquidity over the past decade.

Ultra-low interest rates, large-scale quantitative easing programs, and central bank asset purchases pushed valuations higher across many asset classes.

Equities, cryptocurrencies, and real estate all benefited from the easy money environment that dominated global markets for much of the past decade.

But as central banks gradually tighten policy and bond yields rise, the financial conditions that supported those valuations are beginning to shift.

Historically, markets tend to become more volatile when liquidity tightens.

Converging Risks

Market strategists say the current environment is notable because several major stress factors are appearing simultaneously.

Among the key risks being monitored by investors are:

escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East
potential disruptions to global oil supply routes
rising government bond yields in major economies
possible shifts in global capital flows

When multiple risk factors build at the same time, financial markets often react with sharp swings in asset prices.

Equities and other risk-sensitive investments typically respond first as investors reassess economic growth expectations and liquidity conditions.

What Investors Are Watching Next

While global markets have remained relatively resilient so far, analysts say developments in the coming days could influence sentiment significantly.

Any escalation in Middle East tensions affecting oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz would likely have an immediate impact on energy prices and global inflation expectations.

At the same time, movements in bond yields and capital flows from major financial centers such as Japan could shape liquidity conditions for global markets.

For investors and policymakers alike, the coming period may prove critical in determining whether markets stabilize or enter a new phase of volatility.

Video circulating online shows a large fire at an oil facility in Tehran after Israeli strikes reportedly targeted multiple Iranian fuel storage tanks as the regional war intensifies.

Fires erupted at a refinery complex near the Iranian capital

Conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States continues to expand across the Gulf

Tehran: A major fire erupted at an oil facility near Tehran after Israeli forces reportedly struck multiple Iranian fuel storage tanks, according to video footage circulating across international media and social platforms.

The footage, broadcast by several international networks, shows thick black smoke rising above the refinery complex as flames spread across large fuel storage areas.

— Open Source Intel (@Osint613) March 7, 2026

Early reports indicate that around 30 oil storage tanks may have been targeted during the strike, though Iranian authorities have not yet released an official damage assessment.

Energy infrastructure attacks represent a significant escalation in the conflict because they directly threaten domestic fuel supply and global oil markets.

The targeted facility is believed to be part of the Shahr-e Rey oil refinery area south of Tehran, one of the largest fuel processing hubs supplying the Iranian capital.

Emergency crews were seen responding to the blaze as the fire continued burning across several sections of the facility.

War Expands Into Energy Infrastructure

The latest strike comes as the widening confrontation involving Iran, Israel, and the United States enters its second week.

Military officials say Israeli operations have increasingly targeted strategic Iranian infrastructure in addition to military sites.

Defense analysts note that attacks on refineries and fuel storage sites could place significant pressure on Iran’s internal energy supply and logistics network.

Despite the strikes, journalists reporting from Tehran say daily life in the capital remains relatively calm.

Markets, transportation, and public services are still operating, and there have been no confirmed reports of widespread shortages of food or fuel.

US Military Campaign Intensifies

Military officials in Washington say the United States has conducted large-scale strikes on Iranian military infrastructure using long-range bombers and precision weapons.

According to regional defense briefings, B-2 stealth bombers dropped dozens of 2,000-pound bunker-penetrating bombs targeting underground missile launch facilities believed to be hidden inside mountainous terrain.

US Central Command says these strikes have significantly reduced Iran’s ability to launch long-range attacks.

Missile launches have reportedly fallen about 90 percent compared with the first day of the conflict
Drone attacks have declined approximately 83 percent
Several Iranian naval vessels have also been destroyed during operations in the Gulf and surrounding waters

Military analysts say the campaign is one of the most technologically intensive air operations conducted in the Middle East in recent years.

Economic Cost of War Mounts

The financial impact of the conflict is rapidly growing for both the United States and Israel.

Estimates cited in defense and economic briefings suggest the United States is spending approximately $891 million per day on military operations related to the conflict.

Within the first week alone, combined operational costs and economic disruptions have already reached about $53 billion, with analysts warning that the overall cost could climb to between $100 billion and $210 billion if the war continues.

Israel is also experiencing heavy economic pressure as security restrictions disrupt daily life.

Economic researchers estimate the Israeli economy is losing roughly $3 billion per week due to school closures, suspended flights, and the mobilization of thousands of military reservists.

Several missile strikes have reportedly hit areas near central Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport, forcing temporary security shutdowns and causing localized infrastructure damage.

Gulf Region Faces Growing Security Threats

The conflict has increasingly spilled into the Gulf, where several countries host key American military installations.

Regional defense reports indicate that Iranian missiles and drones have targeted multiple strategic locations:

Qatar: An early-warning radar system valued at about $1.1 billion at Al-Udeid Air Base was reportedly destroyed
United Arab Emirates: A $500 million missile defense radar in Al-Ruways Industrial City was hit
Bahrain: Missile strikes reportedly damaged infrastructure near the US Fifth Fleet headquarters and an oil refinery facility
Saudi Arabia: Air defense systems intercepted drones and a cruise missile over Riyadh and Al-Kharj

Security officials across the Gulf have raised alert levels while air defense systems remain on standby for additional attacks.

Energy Markets Under Pressure

One of the biggest global impacts of the conflict has been the threat to shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

About 20 percent of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Since the conflict began, Brent crude oil prices have surged roughly 25 percent to around $93 per barrel, while natural gas prices have jumped more than 60 percent within a week.

Energy officials warn prices could rise further if tanker traffic is disrupted.

Qatar’s energy minister cautioned that prolonged instability in the Strait could potentially push oil prices toward $150 per barrel, a level not seen since major global supply shocks.

Aviation and Tourism Disruptions

The conflict has also created severe disruption for international travel across the Gulf.

Airlines have rerouted or canceled thousands of flights to avoid missile and drone corridors.

Regional aviation authorities estimate that more than 23,000 flights have been canceled, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded across major hubs including Dubai International Airport.

Tourism analysts warn the broader economic consequences could be severe. Early projections suggest the Middle East travel industry could face losses between $34 billion and $56 billion this year if instability continues.

Strategic Oil Shift Involving India and Russia

In a significant geopolitical move aimed at stabilizing global energy supply, the United States has temporarily eased restrictions on Russian oil shipments to India.

Under a 30-day waiver, Indian refineries are permitted to import Russian crude to offset potential shortages caused by the conflict and uncertainty around Iranian exports.

Energy analysts say the policy adjustment reflects Washington’s effort to prevent a global supply shock while maintaining pressure on Tehran during the ongoing conflict.

As military operations continue and diplomatic tensions deepen, analysts warn that the war’s economic ripple effects may extend far beyond the Middle East, affecting global trade, energy prices, and financial markets in the weeks ahead.

Prime Video released the trailer for the final season of The Boys, revealing Homelander’s hunt for the original Compound V formula and a deadly virus capable of killing every superpowered person on Earth.

 Key Points

Trailer confirms Homelander is searching for V1, the original Compound V formula

A global supe-killing virus could eliminate every superpowered character

Final season sets up a last battle between Homelander and Butcher’s team

The final chapter of one of television’s most controversial superhero dramas is approaching. Prime Video has released the first trailer for the last season of The Boys, signaling an explosive end to the series that redefined the genre with its dark satire of celebrity culture, corporate power, and politics..

The trailer opens with Homelander declaring his authority to be “absolute” while speaking about a future he describes as America’s “ascension.” The speech signals a dramatic shift in the character’s ambitions. After seasons spent chasing public approval and later ruling through fear, Homelander now appears to be preparing for permanent domination.

A central reveal in the trailer is Homelander’s search for V1, the earliest version of the Compound V formula developed by Vought International.

In the show’s mythology, Compound V is the chemical that created every superpowered hero in the series. But the trailer suggests the first experimental version, V1, may contain a far more dangerous secret. Characters warn that if Homelander obtains the original formula, it could make him effectively immortal, removing the last weakness standing between him and absolute power.

The Deadly Supe Virus

Another major storyline teased in the trailer revolves around the supe-killing virus, first introduced in the Gen V spinoff and later referenced in Season 4.

The virus is described as a biological weapon capable of killing every superpowered individual, on the planet.

Members of Butcher’s group appear divided on whether to use it. Some characters argue it may be their last opportunity to stop Homelander’s rise, while others warn the consequences would be catastrophic.

The dilemma is especially brutal because several of their closest allies are also supes. If the virus is released, it would likely kill characters such as Starlight and Kimiko, forcing the team to choose between saving humanity or sacrificing their own friends.

The conflict reflects one of the show’s longest running themes: whether defeating monsters requires becoming one.

A Desperate Strategy Against Homelander

The trailer also hints at a risky infiltration plan.

At one point a character suggests a new tactic: “If you can’t beat him, join him then beat him.”

The strategy appears to involve embedding someone within Homelander’s inner circle to strike from the inside. Similar undercover efforts in earlier seasons often ended in betrayal or tragedy, raising doubts about whether the team can survive another attempt.

The footage also includes references to the complicated Soldier Boy–Homelander–Ryan family storyline, which has shaped the power dynamics of the series since Season 3.

A brief exchange referencing a “father” suggests the show will revisit the violent legacy connecting multiple generations of supes.

A Series Built on Dark Satire

Since its debut in 2019, The Boys has become one of Prime Video’s most successful original productions.

The show built a reputation for pushing boundaries with graphic violence, political commentary, and biting satire aimed at modern internet culture. Even the new trailer continues that tradition, mocking online “alpha male” culture through sarcastic dialogue referencing “beta male” behavior.

Industry analysts say the final season carries enormous expectations. The series has consistently ranked among the platform’s most watched global shows, and its influence has extended into spinoffs, comics sales, and social media fandom.

The Final Battle Approaches

The trailer closes with Homelander promising “oblivion” for anyone who opposes him, setting a grim tone for the endgame.

With Butcher’s team holding the virus and Homelander chasing the secret of V1, the final season appears to be building toward a confrontation where survival itself is uncertain.

As one character declares in the closing moments of the trailer: “Till the day I die.”

Arrests come amid heightened Gulf tensions involving Iran and regional allies

Manama, Bahrain: Bahraini authorities have arrested eight individuals accused of sharing videos related to Iranian attacks and posting content expressing sympathy toward Iran on social media, officials said as security measures tightened across the Gulf.

The arrests were carried out as part of an ongoing crackdown targeting online material that authorities say could mislead the public and create panic during a period of heightened regional tension.

According to Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior, the suspects were detained after investigators identified posts circulating online that appeared to support Iranian military actions and spread videos linked to the attacks.

Officials said such material could influence public opinion and cause fear among residents, warning that the spread of unverified or politically charged content during a security crisis poses risks to national stability.

Authorities stated that sharing content perceived as supportive of foreign aggression may violate national security laws and undermine public order.

The latest arrests bring the total number of detainees in the investigation to eight individuals, according to officials familiar with the case.

Regional Tensions Driving Security Crackdown

The detentions come as Gulf states remain on high alert following a series of escalating military developments involving Iran, Israel, and the United States across the region.

Governments across the Gulf have increased surveillance of online platforms amid concerns that misinformation or politically motivated content could inflame tensions or destabilize public sentiment.

Security officials say monitoring of social media has intensified in recent days as regional governments attempt to prevent the spread of material that could amplify conflict narratives or undermine internal stability.

Sectarian Sensitivities in Bahrain

Bahrain’s government has historically taken a strict stance on activities viewed as supporting Iranian influence.

The island nation is ruled by a Sunni monarchy while a large portion of its population belongs to the Shiite community, a demographic dynamic that has periodically created political tension.

Authorities say maintaining stability during a period of regional conflict is a top priority, particularly as military developments continue to unfold across the Middle East.

Officials warned that additional arrests could follow if similar content continues to circulate online.

The Ministry of Interior urged residents to avoid sharing unverified videos or politically sensitive material related to ongoing conflicts, emphasizing that national security laws will be strictly enforced during the current crisis..

 Key Points

Dubai Financial Market General Index fell about 4.7 percent during trading on March 4

Major UAE-listed companies including Emaar Properties declined nearly 5 percent

Escalating regional conflict and energy market volatility added pressure on Gulf markets

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Selling pressure swept across the Dubai Financial Market on Tuesday afternoon as investors reacted to rapidly escalating geopolitical tensions across the Gulf, pushing the emirate’s main equity index sharply lower during active trading.

The Dubai Financial Market General Index dropped to around 6,197 points, down roughly 306 points or 4.71 percent, according to market data recorded during the trading session. The decline marked one of the steepest intraday drops for the benchmark index in recent weeks.

Heavy losses were also visible among several widely traded UAE-listed companies.

Shares of Dubai Financial Market PJSC were trading near 1.53 AED, down almost 4.97 percent, while property giant Emaar Properties PJSC slipped to about 15.40 AED, a decline of roughly 4.94 percent during the same session.

Trading floors and brokerage desks across the emirate reported heightened caution among investors as the regional security situation continued to deteriorate through the day.

Several traders said the selling pressure intensified during the afternoon session as breaking geopolitical developments began circulating through global financial markets.

“There is a clear risk-off sentiment right now,” one Dubai-based equities trader said, noting that investors were closely monitoring regional security updates before placing large positions.

Analysts said markets across the Gulf tend to react quickly to geopolitical shocks because of the region’s close ties to global energy flows and shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz, located just north of the United Arab Emirates, remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, and any perceived threat to the waterway can trigger rapid movements in both oil and equity markets.

Market participants said uncertainty surrounding the widening conflict has also begun influencing energy prices and global investor sentiment.

Conflict Escalation Raises Regional Risk

Financial markets were reacting to a cascade of military and diplomatic developments reported across the region over the past several hours.

US President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces carried out what he described as a “substantial” strike targeting Iran’s new leadership, claiming that Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly degraded.

At the same time, Israeli forces reportedly carried out airstrikes against senior Iranian leadership gatherings during an ongoing leadership meeting, according to regional security reports.

The conflict has also begun affecting neighboring countries and key strategic infrastructure.

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates said their air defenses intercepted 11 ballistic missiles and 123 drones in a single day, highlighting the scale of aerial threats emerging across the region.

Meanwhile, energy markets briefly surged after fears that tensions could disrupt oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes.

Oil prices initially jumped sharply before partially retreating after Washington announced that US naval forces would escort tankers through the Gulf if necessary.

Global energy markets are also monitoring reports that Iraq may shut down Rumaila oil field, one of the largest oil-producing sites in the world, which could potentially remove around 3 million barrels per day from global supply if disruptions continue.

Aviation and Travel Disruptions

The security situation has also triggered significant disruption to international travel.

More than 1 million travelers are reported stranded across the region, with approximately 1,900 flights canceled as airspace restrictions and security concerns spread through major Gulf aviation hubs.

The US State Department said it is arranging charter flights from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan to assist American citizens attempting to leave the region.

Investors Watching Regional Developments Closely

Financial analysts say the direction of Gulf markets in the coming sessions will likely depend heavily on whether the conflict stabilizes or continues to escalate.

Investors are also monitoring signals from global central banks and commodity markets after US Federal Reserve official Neel Kashkari indicated that the conflict could complicate expectations for interest rate cuts this year.

For now, traders say markets remain highly sensitive to every new headline emerging from the region.

With geopolitical developments unfolding rapidly, market volatility across the Gulf is expected to remain elevated in the near term.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Traffic slowed along Al Seef Road as smoke briefly rose near the US Consulate compound, drawing a visible security response in the surrounding district. Within minutes, emergency sirens echoed across the area as first responders sealed off access points.

Dubai’s Government Media Office confirmed that a drone strike triggered a limited fire in the vicinity of the US Consulate on Tuesday. Authorities said emergency teams were dispatched immediately and brought the situation under control.

“Emergency teams responded at once. No injuries have been reported,” officials said in a brief statement.

— The Land of News (@thelandofnews) March 3, 2026

Witnesses in nearby commercial buildings described seeing a plume of dark smoke that lasted less than 12 minutes before thinning out. Security personnel redirected vehicles while fire crews worked inside a restricted perimeter.

The incident comes amid ongoing regional military escalation following Iranian missile and drone exchanges across parts of the Gulf. Air defense systems across multiple Gulf states have been activated repeatedly over the past several days, heightening security around diplomatic missions and strategic infrastructure.

Diplomatic facilities are typically placed under enhanced protection during periods of elevated threat. Analysts note that even limited incidents near US compounds carry symbolic weight, given their geopolitical visibility.

What this changes

Any strike in the vicinity of a US diplomatic facility shifts the security calculus immediately. Even if damage is contained and no injuries occur, host governments typically increase perimeter security, review airspace monitoring protocols and coordinate closely with US officials.

Why this matters now

The Gulf is navigating a fragile security environment with active missile and drone exchanges underway. Incidents involving diplomatic sites risk widening the perception of escalation and could influence both military posture and market confidence. Maintaining containment is critical to preventing broader fallout.

Authorities have not released details on the origin of the drone or the extent of material damage. The situation was declared stable shortly after the fire was extinguished, and no evacuation of nearby neighborhoods was announced.

The UAE has pushed back against what it called inaccurate Bloomberg reporting on its defense readiness, issuing a firm response as missile interceptions continue across the Gulf amid rising regional tensions.

 Key Points:

UAE Foreign Ministry rejects Bloomberg claims as “false and misleading”

Officials say multi-layered air defense systems remain fully operational

Statement comes during third day of regional missile and drone escalation

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates: By late afternoon, security vehicles were stationed outside key government buildings while air defense chatter circulated across regional monitoring channels. Inside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officials moved to counter what they described as inaccurate reporting about the country’s defensive posture.

In a statement issued hours after the latest round of regional missile interceptions, the ministry categorically rejected what it called “false and misleading claims” published by Bloomberg regarding the UAE’s defense capabilities.

“The unfounded assertions misrepresent the UAE’s high level of preparedness, technological sophistication and operational readiness,” the statement said.

Officials stressed that the country operates “diverse, integrated and multi-layered air defense systems” capable of countering a full spectrum of aerial threats. Long, medium and short-range systems function together to provide what the ministry described as comprehensive protection of national airspace.

The clarification comes as Gulf states face sustained aerial threats for a third consecutive day following Iranian missile and drone launches targeting multiple countries in the region.

A defense performance graphic circulated by officials outlines the total volume of Iranian projectiles intercepted by UAE air and missile defense systems between February 28 and March 2, 2026.

According to the data, despite facing what was described as a highly coordinated saturation attack involving hundreds of distinct vectors, interception rates remained extraordinarily high, limiting structural damage to isolated incidents.

Interception systems were activated across the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, according to regional defense updates.

The ministry added that the UAE maintains a robust strategic stockpile of munitions designed to ensure sustained interception capacity over extended periods. It reaffirmed that operational readiness remains intact and national security frameworks are uncompromised.

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE President, addressed the broader climate in a post on X, saying crises reveal “true intentions” and test who genuinely stands with Gulf stability. He suggested that some ideological movements prioritize their own agendas over regional security during moments of strain.

Defense analysts note that perception plays a measurable role in deterrence economics. Even minor speculation about air defense gaps can influence insurance premiums for shipping lanes and aviation risk assessments. During previous regional escalations, war risk insurance adjustments moved by 3.6 percent within 48 hours of heightened threat reporting.

What this changes

Publicly rebutting a major financial news outlet signals that the UAE views narrative control as part of its deterrence strategy. In periods of active missile exchange, market psychology can shift faster than battlefield conditions. Governments move quickly to prevent misinterpretation from affecting investor confidence, energy flows and airspace operations.

While defense systems have maintained an interception rate exceeding 90%, the scale of the saturation attacks has not been without human cost. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that falling debris and localized impacts have resulted in three fatalities, identified as Pakistani, Nepali, and Bangladeshi nationals, and several dozen minor injuries. In response to the persistent aerial threat, the UAE’s aviation landscape remains heavily restricted. Emirates and Etihad Airways have extended the suspension of most commercial departures until at least March 4, though authorities announced a 'limited resumption' of special repatriation and cargo flights today. Travelers are being strictly advised not to head to airports unless they have received direct confirmation of a scheduled flight from their carrier.

Why this matters now

The Gulf is navigating one of its most fragile security periods in recent years. Missile exchanges, drone interceptions and expanded regional military coordination are unfolding simultaneously. In this environment, defense credibility is not abstract. It directly affects oil corridor stability, aviation routing and regional diplomacy. Any suggestion of weakness carries economic and geopolitical consequences.

On the ground, there were no confirmed disruptions to commercial airports, and air traffic continued under monitored conditions. Residents reported hearing distant interception activity overnight, though authorities stated systems performed as designed.

The broader confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel continues to heighten concerns about a wider regional spillover. Gulf governments have intensified coordination and reiterated calls for restraint.

The UAE’s message was clear: its defensive infrastructure remains steady despite the regional escalation.

A coordinated US and Israeli strike targeted Iran’s Supreme Leader during a Saturday morning meeting in Tehran after intelligence confirmed his location. Iranian state media later confirmed his death and announced nationwide mourning.

 Key Points:

Strike launched after intelligence confirmed Khamenei’s presence at a secret Tehran meeting

Operation reportedly advanced from evening to morning to maximize surprise

Iran responded with drones and missiles across the region

Tehran, Iran: Just after 8:17 a.m. local time on Saturday, the quiet streets surrounding a fortified compound in northern Tehran were shattered by the sound of explosions that residents later described as “two sharp blasts followed by a rolling tremor.” Within minutes, smoke rose above the guarded perimeter of the site long believed to host confidential meetings of Iran’s top leadership.

According to Reuters, US and Israeli officials moved quickly once intelligence sources confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was about to convene a meeting with senior advisers. The strike, initially planned for Saturday evening, was advanced when Israeli intelligence reportedly learned that the meeting had been shifted to the morning.

US officials cited by international media said the primary objective was surprise. “The window was narrow,” one official told reporters on background. “Delay would have risked losing visibility.” The intention, according to those briefed on the operation, was to prevent Khamenei from relocating to one of several secure sites believed to be part of his protective routine.

The attack reportedly began with precision strikes on the heavily secured compound in Tehran. Satellite imagery reviewed by international agencies later showed extensive structural damage across an estimated 11,400 square meters of the site, including the central meeting wing.

The New York Times reported that the CIA had been monitoring Khamenei’s movements for several months. US intelligence allegedly identified what officials described as a rare high-level gathering involving top security figures. Information about the meeting and Khamenei’s presence was shared with Israel, after which the operation was finalized.

At the time of the strike, Khamenei was reportedly meeting with Ali Shamkhani, former secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, and Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Revolutionary Guards. Iranian state media confirmed their deaths along with the Supreme Leader’s on Sunday morning, declaring a period of national mourning and describing the event as martyrdom.

According to Iranian reports, some members of Khamenei’s family were also killed in the attack, though official casualty numbers have not been fully disclosed.

The timing carries strategic weight. Saturday morning in Tehran meant a compressed reaction window. Security rotations were reportedly lighter compared to weekend evening gatherings, and regional air traffic patterns were different than weekday conditions. Intelligence analysts suggest that early-morning operations reduce the likelihood of rapid dispersal.

This marks one of the most significant targeted operations involving a sitting head of state in recent decades. The last comparable high-profile targeted killing was the 2020 US drone strike on Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, which triggered weeks of regional escalation and financial market volatility. Oil prices at that time jumped nearly 4.7 percent in early trading.

Within hours of Saturday’s strike, Iran launched retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting multiple countries in the region, including Israel. Regional air defense systems were activated across at least three neighboring states, according to defense officials.

What this changes

The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader creates an immediate succession vacuum inside a tightly controlled political structure. Markets are likely to react sharply, particularly crude oil futures and regional insurance rates for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption to that corridor, which handles roughly 20 percent of global oil shipments, could affect gasoline prices in the United States within days.

Why this matters now

The Middle East was already navigating heightened tensions involving proxy conflicts and nuclear negotiations. The removal of Iran’s highest authority alters the strategic balance overnight. How Tehran restructures leadership, and how Washington and Jerusalem respond to retaliation, will shape regional security calculations for months.

There was no immediate independent confirmation from neutral observers inside Tehran, and communications across parts of the capital were reportedly disrupted for nearly three hours after the strike.

By Sunday evening, large crowds had gathered in central Tehran, chanting slogans and holding black flags. The atmosphere was tense. Security forces were visible at major intersections, and several embassies issued shelter advisories to their nationals.

The situation remains fluid.

The UAE has closed its stock markets and airspace as regional tensions surge following Iran-related strikes. Officials say safety systems are fully active while thousands of travelers face flight disruptions.

 Key Points:

UAE stock markets to shut March 2 and 3 amid regional tensions

Airspace closures leave thousands of travelers stranded

Authorities say national safety systems remain fully active

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates moved swiftly to stabilize markets and public safety on Sunday as regional tensions intensified following Iranian missile attacks and the ongoing US-Israel military campaign.

The Capital Market Authority announced that both the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and the Dubai Financial Market will remain closed on Monday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 3.

Officials said the decision was taken under the regulator’s supervisory mandate and in line with applicable laws as authorities continue to monitor fast-moving developments across the Gulf.

Markets paused as precaution

The temporary market shutdown comes as governments across the Gulf Cooperation Council heighten security readiness following retaliatory strikes and cross-border threats.

Regulators stressed they will continue assessing the situation and will issue further guidance if conditions change.

UAE airspace disruptions deepen

The financial move follows widespread aviation disruption that has stranded thousands of travelers across the Emirates.

Airspace over the UAE remains closed, with operations suspended at major hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Airlines including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai and Air Arabia have issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status before heading to airports.

Authorities say more than 20,200 affected passengers have already received accommodation, meals and rebooking support under emergency plans.

Tourists face uncertainty

Travel officials confirmed that many visitors currently cannot leave the country until restrictions are lifted.

Hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been instructed to extend stays for stranded guests and prioritize visitor welfare during the disruption.

Most airlines are offering flexible rebooking or full refunds, but officials warn schedules could change at short notice as the regional situation evolves.

Safety systems fully active

Despite the disruptions, the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority said the UAE’s national readiness system is fully operational.

In a message to residents, authorities said the situation remains under control and urged the public to remain calm, stay indoors during alerts and rely only on official information channels.

Emergency guidance instructs residents to seek immediate shelter away from windows if missile alerts sound and to report any suspicious debris to authorities without approaching it.

Education shifts online

As a precaution, all schools and universities across the UAE have moved to distance learning from March 2 through March 4. Officials said the measure will be reviewed continuously based on security assessments.

Air defenses intercept threats

The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that air defense systems have intercepted the majority of incoming threats since the escalation began.

A separate official clarification addressing external reporting on the country’s defense posture provides further detail on the volume of projectiles intercepted and the performance of the UAE’s multi-layered air defense systems during the current escalation.

Authorities reported that more than 100 ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones were tracked, with the vast majority destroyed mid-air. Some debris caused minor property damage in parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Officials also confirmed fatalities and injuries of multiple nationalities from falling debris, while stressing that overall civil order and essential services remain intact.

Strong warning on misinformation

UAE Public Prosecution issued a firm warning against spreading rumors or unverified content on social media, saying violators could face legal action even for resharing false information.

Officials urged residents and visitors to follow only verified government channels for updates.

Situation remains fluid

Regional tensions remain elevated following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliation across parts of the Gulf.

Authorities across the UAE say security forces remain on high alert and that additional measures will be taken if required.

For now, officials emphasize that daily life continues under enhanced precautions while the country monitors developments around the clock.

Police say officers shot and killed the suspect within minutes

AUSTIN, Texas: Panic swept through the crowded West Sixth Street nightlife district early Sunday after gunfire erupted outside Buford’s bar, leaving three people dead and 14 others hospitalized, officials said.

Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz told reporters the first emergency call came in at 1:59 a.m., with paramedics arriving on scene just 57 seconds later in what authorities described as a rapid response.

Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers already working nearby quickly moved from East Sixth Street to West Sixth, where they confronted an armed suspect.

“Three of our officers returned fire, killing the suspect,” Davis confirmed during the early morning briefing.

Victims rushed to hospitals

Luckritz said three people, including the suspected shooter, were pronounced dead at the scene. Fourteen additional victims were transported to local hospitals, with three listed in critical condition.

Emergency crews treated multiple patients along the busy entertainment strip, which is typically packed with late-night crowds as bars close.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as shots rang out, with people running in all directions while first responders flooded the area.

Heavy police presence

Authorities sealed off several blocks around West Sixth Street near the intersection with Nueces Street as investigators began processing the scene.

Federal partners are assisting Austin police, and officials warned the investigation could take several hours as detectives work to determine the motive and sequence of events.

So far, police have not released the identity of the suspect or provided details about what led to the shooting.

Mayor praises rapid response

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson credited first responders for preventing further loss of life.

“I want to again reiterate my thanks to our public safety officers and officials that so rapidly were on the scene,” Watson said. “They definitely saved lives.”

Skywatchers across the Northern Hemisphere are preparing for a rare celestial lineup on February 28, when multiple planets will appear together in the evening sky in what astronomers call a planetary parade.

The event, visible shortly after sunset, will feature Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune positioned along the same general arc of the sky. NASA says such multi planet alignments are uncommon, though not all the worlds will be equally easy to spot.

Chelsea Gohd, an outreach specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said the best viewing window begins just after sunset.

“Saturn will be near the horizon, Venus and Mercury will be higher up in the sky, and Jupiter will be up high near the Moon,” Gohd explained.

What viewers will actually see

Despite viral claims online, astronomers caution that the spectacle may be less dramatic than some social media posts suggest.

Five of the planets can typically be seen without equipment under clear, dark skies. Uranus and Neptune, however, are much dimmer and will require binoculars or a telescope for most observers.

Jupiter is expected to be the easiest target, shining brightly high in the evening sky. Venus should also stand out, though it may appear lower toward the western horizon.

Mercury and Saturn will be more challenging because they sit closer to the sunset glow, while Uranus and Neptune remain faint background objects.

Timing and viewing tips

The planetary alignment will be visible globally on the evening of February 28, with the best conditions in the Northern Hemisphere shortly after local sunset.

Astronomers recommend finding a location away from city lights with a clear view of the western horizon. Light pollution, clouds and the bright waxing Moon may reduce visibility in some areas.

For beginners, experts suggest using stargazing apps such as Stellarium or SkySafari to help identify each planet’s position in real time.

Equipment advice for beginners

While the event can be enjoyed with the naked eye, binoculars significantly improve the experience, especially for spotting Uranus and Neptune.

Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society previously advised that newcomers should consider quality optics rather than extremely low cost telescopes.

“Dark skies are best,” Gohd said. “Your view will be clearest if you can find a viewing location where the horizon is unobstructed.”

Why this alignment matters now

The February sky show arrives just days before a total lunar eclipse expected in early March, creating an unusually active period for skywatchers and astronomy enthusiasts.

While not a perfectly straight line of planets, the February 28 alignment still offers one of the better multi planet viewing opportunities of 2026.

Officials say the event should be visible across most of the United States, weather permitting.

Protests erupted across multiple Pakistani cities after Iran strike tensions

Authorities impose curbs and launch investigations as unrest spreads

KARACHI: Chaos erupted along Mai Kolachi Road early Sunday as security forces confronted hundreds of demonstrators attempting to push toward the US Consulate, leaving at least nine people dead and dozens injured, hospital officials confirmed.

Police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed said multiple bodies were brought to Civil Hospital Karachi, while emergency responders reported gunshot injuries among the wounded. The confrontation followed a wave of emotionally charged protests that swept several Pakistani cities amid escalating tensions tied to the Iran crisis.

Witness videos circulating online showed injured protesters being carried away by bystanders as law enforcement moved to disperse crowds using tear gas and baton charges.

Situation spirals near consulate

According to local officials, protesters breached outer security barriers near the diplomatic compound before police pushed them back. Streets around the high-security zone were sealed within minutes, and traffic was diverted across key arteries of the city.

A diplomat inside the compound later told reporters, “We’re safe,” as security agencies tightened the perimeter.

Dr. Mohammad Sabir Memon, executive director of Civil Hospital Karachi’s trauma center, said more than 30 injured people were treated, many with firearm wounds. Authorities have not yet issued a final verified casualty figure, and numbers remain under review.

Government orders investigation

The Sindh government expressed what it called “deep grief” over the loss of life and announced a high-level joint investigation team to determine the sequence of events.

Officials said the probe will examine how protesters breached the cordon and whether force was used proportionately.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar directed police to strengthen security around sensitive installations, warning that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

Traffic police simultaneously shut major routes leading to the consulate zone, creating widespread disruption across Karachi’s commercial corridor.

Protests spread nationwide

Demonstrations quickly expanded beyond Karachi.

In Lahore, hundreds gathered outside the US Consulate, though police contained the crowd without major violence. In Islamabad, authorities imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings in the capital’s Red Zone.

The unrest turned more severe in Gilgit-Baltistan, where officials confirmed a curfew in Skardu after protesters set fire to a United Nations office and blocked key highways. Authorities said foreign tourists in the region were moved to safe locations as a precaution.

Local spokesperson Shabbir Mir confirmed the UN facility was burned but reported no casualties in that incident.

Regional ripple effects

Security agencies across Pakistan remain on high alert as intelligence officials warn of further demonstrations.

The US Embassy in Islamabad issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid large crowds and maintain heightened awareness. Law enforcement units have been deployed around diplomatic sites in multiple cities.

Analysts say the unrest reflects how rapidly regional tensions are spilling onto the streets of major population centers.

Officials in Karachi described the situation as fluid and warned that casualty figures and investigation findings could evolve as more information becomes available.

DUBAI: The fast-moving US-Israel military campaign against Iran entered a volatile new phase Saturday as President Donald Trump claimed senior Iranian leaders were killed, while Tehran pushed back and insisted Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remains in command.

The sharply conflicting narratives underscored the fog of war now gripping the region, with Gulf governments on high alert and global markets watching closely.

Trump claims leadership losses

Speaking to ABC News, President Trump said the joint strikes had “incapacitated” Iran’s leadership structure and suggested Washington already has a clear picture of who could take power in Tehran.

“A lot of it is,” Trump said when asked whether Iranian leaders were believed to be dead.

The White House has not publicly released evidence supporting the claim, and Iranian authorities have not confirmed any senior leadership deaths.

Netanyahu raises pressure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu further escalated rhetoric, urging Iranians to “overthrow the regime” in a televised address following the strikes.

“This is your time to unite for a historic mission,” Netanyahu said, framing the operation as an opportunity for political change inside Iran.

He also claimed there were “signs” that Khamenei may have been killed in the attack on his Tehran compound, though he provided no proof and Israeli officials have not independently verified the assertion.

Iran rejects leadership rumors

Iranian state-linked agencies Tasnim and Mehr quickly moved to counter the speculation, reporting that Khamenei is “steadfast and firm in commanding the field.”

There has been no official Iranian confirmation of any leadership casualties, and the situation remains unclear amid heavy information warfare on both sides.

Civilian toll reported in south

Separately, Iran’s judiciary said the death toll from a strike that hit a girls’ school in the southern city of Minab has risen to 85.

AFP reported it was unable to independently verify the casualty figures or the circumstances surrounding the incident, and US and Israeli officials have not publicly commented on the claim.

Pentagon reports minimal damage

Despite Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone barrage across the region, the Pentagon said US forces largely blunted the attacks.

US Central Command reported that American defenses intercepted hundreds of incoming threats, adding that there were no US casualties and only minimal damage to installations.

“Damage to US installations was minimal and has not impacted operations,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

Region remains on edge

The latest developments come as Gulf states continue emergency aviation restrictions and heightened security monitoring following earlier explosions reported in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE.

With military operations expected to continue for days, analysts warn the situation remains highly fluid, with the risk of further escalation still significant.

Dubai: A major military escalation shook the Gulf on Saturday after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes across Iran, prompting swift retaliation that sent shockwaves through Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

US President Donald Trump described the operation as “massive and ongoing,” warning that American casualties were possible as tensions surged across the Middle East.

Within hours, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the launch of what it called the first wave of missile and drone attacks, expanding the confrontation beyond Iranian territory and raising alarms across key Gulf capitals.

Explosions reported across Gulf states

Residents and officials reported blasts in Doha, Manama, Abu Dhabi and parts of Kuwait, underscoring fears that the conflict could spill deeper into the region where thousands of US troops are stationed.

Bahrain confirmed that a service center associated with the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet was struck in what authorities described as a missile attack. The situation was labeled active, with further details expected.

In Qatar, officials said air defenses intercepted two incoming Iranian missiles. Witnesses in Doha reported hearing multiple explosions as interception systems activated.

The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait also reported heightened alerts, while regional governments moved quickly to secure critical infrastructure.

Airlines and flights disrupted

Regional airspace restrictions triggered widespread flight disruptions across the Gulf, with Dubai-based carriers Emirates and flydubai confirming operational impacts.

Dubai Airports said several Emirates services to destinations including Jordan and Lebanon were cancelled after multiple countries imposed precautionary airspace closures.

“The safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority,” Emirates said, adding that affected travelers are being assisted with rebooking, refunds and alternative arrangements.

flydubai also reported schedule disruptions, with flights to Tehran, Lar, Mashhad and Tel Aviv among those cancelled as the carrier worked to minimize network impact.

Airspace closures and security alerts

Several Gulf countries, including Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE, temporarily closed or restricted airspace as a precautionary measure, creating widespread delays, diversions and cancellations.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority said the partial closure followed a comprehensive security assessment conducted with international partners.

Qatar’s civil aviation authority confirmed a temporary suspension of air traffic, while Kuwait shut its airspace due to regional security concerns.

US diplomatic missions in the region urged American personnel and citizens to shelter in place until further notice.

Regional analysts say the wide geographic spread of alerts reflects concern that US military installations across the Gulf could become targets if the conflict intensifies.

UAE reports civilian death

The UAE Ministry of Defense said air defense systems intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles but confirmed that falling debris struck a residential area.

Officials reported one civilian of Asian nationality was killed and some property damage occurred. Authorities said the overall security situation in the UAE remains stable and under continuous monitoring.

Trump calls for pressure on Tehran

In a video message, President Trump urged Iranians to “take over your government” after military operations conclude, signaling Washington’s hardening stance toward Tehran.

“Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said, while acknowledging the risks of escalation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the joint campaign was intended to remove what he called an existential threat posed by Iran.

Region on edge

The latest escalation comes amid already elevated tensions following months of military positioning and stalled nuclear diplomacy.

Security officials across the Gulf are now on heightened alert as governments monitor the risk of further Iranian retaliation or additional US Israeli strikes in the coming days.

Officials in multiple countries said the situation remains fluid.

International reaction grows

Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev also criticized the US strikes, saying Washington had shown its “true face.” In a Telegram post, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council claimed negotiations with Iran were merely a cover, though US officials have not responded to his remarks.

The peacekeeper is at it again. The talks with Iran were just a cover. Everyone knew that. So who has more patience to wait for the enemy’s sorry end now? The US is just 249 years old. The Persian Empire was founded over 2500 years ago. Let’s see what happens in 100 years or so…

 Key Points:

US and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on Iranian military targets.

Iran launched missile and drone retaliation, including toward a US base in Bahrain.

President Trump called the campaign “massive and ongoing” and warned of risks.

The United States and Israel launched what officials described as a major coordinated military operation against Iran early Saturday, escalating tensions across the Middle East and putting American forces in the region on heightened alert.

President Donald Trump confirmed the campaign in a video address, calling the strikes “massive and ongoing” and warning that US casualties were possible. The operation follows months of what the Israeli military described as close joint planning between Washington and Tel Aviv.

“Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating immediate threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said.

Iran responds with missiles and drones

Within hours of the opening strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had launched the “first wave” of large scale missile and drone attacks toward Israel.

A US official confirmed that an Iranian missile attack targeted the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain, calling the situation active. Explosions were also reported in Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Qatar, all locations that host American military facilities.

Regional air defenses were activated, and several Gulf states moved quickly to close or restrict airspace as the situation intensified.

What the US operation is targeting

The Israel Defense Forces said the campaign is aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities and removing what it called existential threats. Fighter jets were still striking targets across Iran hours after the initial wave.

Two sources familiar with US planning said the military is preparing for several days of continued operations, signaling the confrontation could extend well beyond the initial strikes.

Iran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons, but US officials argue Tehran has been working to rebuild elements of its nuclear and missile programs.

Political reactions build in Washington

The military action quickly drew strong reactions in Washington. Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime Trump ally, called the operation “necessary and long justified.”

Trump went further in his address, urging Iranians to “take over your government,” a statement likely to inflame tensions further with Tehran.

Why this matters now

The strikes mark one of the most direct US military confrontations with Iran in years and raise immediate concerns about the safety of American troops stationed across the Gulf.

With US bases already coming under missile threat and operations expected to continue for days, officials are bracing for possible escalation that could affect global energy markets and regional stability.

For now, the Pentagon has not released casualty figures, and the full scope of damage on either side remains unclear as the situation continues to develop.

LIVE UPDATE

Explosions Reported Across Gulf as Iran Expands Retaliation

Explosions were reported across multiple Gulf countries late Saturday as Iran widened its retaliation following the joint US and Israeli airstrikes, raising fresh concerns about the safety of American military assets in the region.

Officials and regional media reported blasts in Doha, Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi and Manama. The developments came hours after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had launched the first wave of missile and drone attacks in response to the US led operation.

Qatar’s defense ministry said it had successfully repelled “a number of attacks” targeting its territory. A Qatari official confirmed that air defenses intercepted two Iranian missiles over the country, while AFP journalists reported hearing explosions across Doha.

US Fifth Fleet site hit in Bahrain

Bahrain confirmed that a service center linked to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters was struck in what it described as a missile attack. Authorities said additional details would be released later.

Iran’s semi official Fars news agency also reported that Iranian forces had targeted the US facility, signaling a direct challenge to American military presence in the Gulf.

AFP correspondents reported another explosion in Manama shortly after the initial strike.

Airspace closures and regional alerts

As tensions surged, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates moved to close their airspace as a precautionary measure. Sirens were also activated in Kuwait following reports of explosions.

Witnesses in Saudi Arabia reported hearing loud blasts in Riyadh, though officials there have not yet confirmed any strike.

Situation remains highly volatile

The expanding geographic spread of the explosions underscores fears that the confrontation could broaden into a wider regional conflict involving US forces and key American allies.

Pentagon officials have not yet released updated damage assessments, and it remains unclear whether additional Iranian strikes are imminent.

LONGMONT, Colorado. Daniel Simmons, the influential science fiction and horror writer best known for the Hugo Award winning novel Hyperion, has died at the age of 77, according to his family.

Simmons died on February 21 in Longmont following a stroke, with his wife Karen and daughter Jane by his side, family members confirmed in an obituary.

Fellow author David Morrell paid tribute on social media, writing that Simmons “defied literary norms” and calling him “one of a kind.”

From classroom to literary acclaim

Born April 4, 1948, in Peoria, Illinois, Simmons initially built a career in education before turning to full time writing. He taught elementary school for nearly two decades in Missouri, New York and Colorado, where he also helped create a districtwide gifted program.

During his teaching years, Simmons would tell serialized stories to students, a creative practice that later influenced the structure of his most famous work.

Hyperion becomes a science fiction landmark

Simmons’ breakthrough came with Hyperion in 1989, the first book in the acclaimed Hyperion Cantos series. The novel, inspired in part by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, follows seven pilgrims traveling to the mysterious Time Tombs.

The book won the Hugo Award and is widely regarded as one of the most important science fiction novels of the modern era.

His debut novel, Song of Kali, published in 1985, also earned major recognition, winning the World Fantasy Award the following year.

Wide ranging body of work

Across his career, Simmons wrote more than 30 novels and short story collections spanning science fiction, horror, crime and historical fiction. His works were translated into at least 20 languages and published in dozens of countries.

Another major success, The Terror, was adapted into an AMC limited television series in 2018, introducing his work to a broader audience.

Family and legacy

Simmons is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Jane, grandchildren Milo and Lucia Glenn, and his brother Wayne. According to the family, a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka. Under humid night skies at the R. Premadasa Stadium, England held their nerve in a dramatic finish to defeat New Zealand by four wickets in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage on Thursday.

Chasing 160 for victory, England reached 161 for 6 with three balls to spare, delivering a late twist that denied New Zealand an automatic place in the semi-finals.

New Zealand, desperate for a win to confirm qualification, posted 159 for 7 after choosing to bat first. Captain Mitchell Santner provided late momentum, launching a towering six off the final ball of the innings to push the target to exactly 160.

Black Caps post fighting total

The New Zealand innings was built around steady contributions rather than a single dominant knock. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen gave a measured start before England’s bowlers applied pressure through the middle overs.

Santner’s late strike ensured the total remained competitive on a surface that offered grip for the spinners.

England, already through to the semi-finals, approached the chase with calculated aggression. Will Jacks struck a brisk 27 while Rehan Ahmed added a valuable 18, keeping the required rate within reach.

However, the match swung repeatedly in the final overs. With just minutes remaining, win predictors showed New Zealand as heavy favorites, highlighting the pressure England faced.

The turning point came in the penultimate over when England found the boundary at a crucial moment, shifting momentum back in their favor.

Winning moment electrifies Colombo

With four runs needed late in the chase, England produced the decisive blow. A powerful heave to the leg side cleared the longest boundary, sparking celebrations in the England dugout and silencing much of the Colombo crowd.

The chase was completed in 19.3 overs, capping one of the most dramatic finishes of the Super 8 stage.

England Playing XI: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (w), Harry Brook (c), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

New Zealand Playing XI: Tim Seifert (w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner (c), Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson.

What it means for the semi-finals

England carry strong momentum into the last four, but the defeat leaves New Zealand’s fate uncertain. The Black Caps must now depend on net run rate and results involving Pakistan to secure the remaining semi-final berth.

The late twist has added fresh drama to an already tight T20 World Cup qualification race.

US stocks slid Friday after wholesale inflation came in hotter than expected, sending the Dow down more than 600 points and putting major indexes on track for February losses.

 Key Points

Dow drops more than 600 points after stronger than expected PPI

Nasdaq and S and P 500 also decline, heading for monthly losses

Markets rattled by AI disruption fears and corporate shakeups

NEW YORK. Wall Street closed sharply lower Friday after fresh inflation data came in hotter than economists expected, intensifying concerns that interest rates could remain elevated for longer.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 1.3 percent, shedding more than 600 points in afternoon trading. The Nasdaq Composite dropped roughly 1.2 percent, while the S and P 500 declined about 0.7 percent.

The selloff puts major US indexes on track to finish February in negative territory, with the Dow poised to snap an eight month winning streak.

Inflation surprise rattles markets

The latest Producer Price Index showed wholesale inflation rose 0.5 percent in January, above the 0.3 percent increase economists had forecast. Core PPI, which excludes food and energy, jumped 0.8 percent, also well above expectations.

The hotter reading renewed investor worries that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer than previously hoped.

AI disruption fears add pressure

Market nerves were already elevated following major corporate developments tied to artificial intelligence.

Block stunned investors by announcing plans to cut nearly half its workforce as part of an AI driven restructuring. Co founder Jack Dorsey warned that many companies could soon make similar moves, fueling broader concerns about AI’s impact on jobs and service industries.

Technology heavy sectors including software, real estate and wealth management have already shown signs of strain.

Mixed corporate moves

Not all stocks were lower. Netflix shares rose after the company abandoned its pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery, while Paramount Skydance moved forward with its acquisition plans.

Meanwhile, Nvidia shares slipped again, extending recent weakness in AI related stocks.

Commodities and crypto diverge

In February trading, hard assets showed strength even as risk assets struggled. Gold climbed about 11 percent for the month, while silver surged roughly 19 percent.

Cryptocurrencies moved the opposite direction. Bitcoin is down around 15 percent in February and remains nearly 50 percent below its October 2025 peak.

Friday’s decline underscores how sensitive markets remain to inflation surprises and AI driven uncertainty. With major indexes now facing potential monthly losses, investors are closely watching upcoming economic data and Federal Reserve signals for clues about the market’s next move.

CULVER CITY, California. Prime Video has released the first official image from its upcoming God of War live action series, offering fans an early look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that production is now underway on the highly anticipated adaptation of PlayStation’s blockbuster franchise. The project has already secured a two season order, signaling strong confidence from the studio.

What the series will follow

According to the official synopsis, the story centers on Kratos and his young son Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye.

The Pentagon says Scouting America will revise policies affecting transgender youth and DEI programs as part of a continued military partnership review, drawing sharp attention to the organization’s evolving rules.

 Key Points

Pentagon says Scouting America will base membership on sex at birth

Changes include ending Citizenship in Society merit badge

Defense officials warn support could be reviewed in six months

WASHINGTON, DC. Scouting America is set to implement several policy changes affecting transgender youth and diversity programs following pressure from the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Friday.

In a video posted on social media, Hegseth said the youth organization will require members to register based on their biological sex at birth rather than gender identity. Applications will list only male and female, and the designation must match a birth certificate.

The Pentagon has been reviewing its longstanding relationship with the group, formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America, as part of a broader push by the Trump administration to roll back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across federal partnerships.

What changes are coming

According to defense officials and Scouting America statements, the planned updates include:

Discontinuing the Citizenship in Society merit badge

Introducing a new Military Service merit badge

Waiving registration fees for children of military families

Updating rules on shared facilities such as tents and bathrooms

Hegseth said the Defense Department will conduct a follow up review within six months and could reconsider military support if the organization fails to comply.

“We hope that doesn’t happen, but it could,” he said.

Scouting America response

In a statement, the Irving, Texas based organization did not directly address the transgender policy but said the changes align with an executive order targeting DEI programs. The group emphasized it will maintain its current name and continue serving more than 200,000 girls in its programs.

Scouting America said the adjustments are intended to strengthen its century long partnership with the U.S. military, noting that scouts historically have been more likely than the general population to serve in uniform.

Long history of policy shifts

The organization has undergone major membership changes over the past decade. It began allowing gay youth in 2013, ended a ban on gay adult leaders in 2015, and opened boys programs to transgender youth in 2017. Girls were admitted to Cub Scouts in 2018 and to the flagship Scouts BSA program in 2019.

The Pentagon had previously warned the group it could lose logistical and installation support if concerns about DEI policies were not addressed.

So the dispute highlights the growing clash between federal policy shifts and youth organizations that have broadened membership rules in recent years. With military support potentially on the line, Scouting America now faces a critical compliance review in the months ahead.

Bill Clinton denied wrongdoing ahead of his closed-door congressional deposition on Jeffrey Epstein, saying he “saw nothing” and ended contact years before the financier’s crimes became public.

 Key Points

Bill Clinton released opening statement before House testimony

Former president denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes

Deposition follows Hillary Clinton’s testimony a day earlier

CHAPPAQUA, New York. Former President Bill Clinton forcefully denied any wrongdoing ahead of his closed-door testimony Friday in the congressional investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, saying he had no knowledge of the financier’s criminal conduct during their past association.

In an opening statement posted on social media before the deposition, Clinton said he appeared voluntarily and intended to cooperate fully with lawmakers.

“I saw nothing, and I did nothing wrong,” Clinton said, adding that he would answer questions truthfully based on what he knew at the time.

The House Oversight Committee is examining Epstein’s network of high-profile contacts as part of a broader review of how the convicted sex offender maintained relationships with influential figures.

Clinton defends Hillary Clinton

In his statement, Clinton also pushed back against the committee’s decision to question his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a day earlier.

“You made Hillary come in. She had nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein. Nothing,” Clinton said, stressing she had no memory of meeting Epstein and never traveled with him.

Hillary Clinton testified Thursday in a separate closed-door session, where she similarly denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.

Why Bill Clinton is testifying

Committee Chairman James Comer said the panel is trying to understand how Epstein maintained ties with powerful political and business figures even after his 2008 guilty plea in Florida.

“No one’s accusing anyone of any wrongdoing,” Comer told reporters ahead of the session, while adding that the public still has questions about Epstein’s network.

Bill Clinton has acknowledged in past statements that he flew on Epstein’s plane multiple times in the early 2000s for foundation-related travel but has repeatedly said he cut off contact years before Epstein’s criminal conduct became widely known.

Part of broader congressional probe

Lawmakers from both parties have supported questioning witnesses connected to Epstein’s circle, though they have differed sharply over the scope and tone of the investigation.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the committee’s top Democrat, said the precedent should apply broadly to other public figures with documented ties to Epstein, including President Donald Trump, who has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged in connection with the case.

The deposition is being conducted behind closed doors in Chappaqua, with committee officials expected to release transcripts and video after legal review.

The investigation into Epstein’s network remains ongoing.

Saudi Arabia’s Citizen Account Program will deposit March support payments on March 10, 2026, during Ramadan. Officials say the payout follows the standard monthly schedule for eligible beneficiaries.

 Key Points

Citizen Account support will be deposited March 10, 2026

Payment coincides with the 21st day of Ramadan

Program confirms deposits follow the regular monthly schedule

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia. Beneficiaries of Saudi Arabia’s Citizen Account Program are preparing for the next support payment scheduled for March 10, 2026, which falls during the final third of the holy month of Ramadan.

Program officials confirmed the deposit will proceed according to the regular timetable, under which payments are issued on the tenth day of each Gregorian month. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, the transfer may be adjusted by one day.

The upcoming disbursement marks the program’s 100th payment cycle, a milestone that authorities say reflects the continuity of the Kingdom’s social protection efforts.

Eligibility requirements remain unchanged

Officials reiterated that beneficiaries must continue to meet the core eligibility conditions, including:

	Saudi citizenship

	Permanent residency inside the Kingdom

	Regular updates of personal information

	Compliance with program registration rules

The Citizen Account also emphasized that entitlement amounts are reviewed periodically based on verified household data and income information.

How beneficiaries can check payments

Program guidance says eligible individuals can use the estimated support calculator to review expected benefits by entering household details and monthly income data.

Support payments are automatically deposited into registered bank accounts, with withdrawals available through the Kingdom’s ATM network and digital banking channels.

So, the March payment arrives during Ramadan, a period when household expenses often increase. Authorities say the program remains a key pillar of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to strengthen social protection and support eligible families.

Officials have advised beneficiaries to ensure their personal data is up to date to avoid any disruption in payments.

DHS agents detained Columbia student Ellie Aghayeva in New York

Officials say her student visa expired in 2016

University reviewing protocols after early morning arrest

NEW YORK CITY, New York. Federal agents detained Columbia University student Ellie Aghayeva early Thursday morning, triggering a dispute between the Department of Homeland Security and university officials over the circumstances of the arrest.

According to DHS, Aghayeva’s student visa had been terminated in 2016 for failing to attend classes. The agency said officers were allowed into the university residence by the student’s roommate and building staff.

Aghayeva, however, posted on social media from detention claiming the arrest was illegal and asking for help.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. at a Columbia residential building in Morningside Heights, according to university communications reviewed by local media.

Who is Ellie Aghayeva

Aghayeva is a senior at Columbia University originally from Azerbaijan, studying neuroscience. She also maintains a sizable online presence, with more than 100,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok where she posts content about student life, productivity, and science.

Her LinkedIn profile lists research work in neuroscience, while recent social posts focused on her life in New York prior to the detention.

https://www.instagram.com/stories/ellharve/

University raises concerns

Acting Columbia President Claire Shipman said federal agents appeared to enter the building while claiming they were searching for a missing person, though DHS disputed that account.

“Our understanding at this time is that the federal agents made misrepresentations to gain entry,” Shipman wrote in a message to the campus community.

In response to the incident, Columbia announced updated guidance stating that federal agents must present a judicial warrant or subpoena to access nonpublic areas of campus housing.

Broader immigration scrutiny

The detention is one of several recent federal actions involving international students at Columbia, including a high-profile case in March 2025 involving another foreign student.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against Aghayeva. Her current immigration status and potential removal proceedings remain unclear.

So, the case highlights rising tensions between universities and federal immigration enforcement as campuses tighten rules on law enforcement access to student housing.

Officials say more information will be released as the situation develops.

Network remains open to future specials or revival

LOS ANGELES, California. Adult Swim’s cult animated comedy Smiling Friends is set to end after its third season, with creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel saying they chose to walk away while the show is still at its peak.

The announcement came in a February 25 video posted to Adult Swim’s YouTube channel, where the duo confirmed the decision was voluntary despite the network previously renewing the series through Season 5.

“To be perfectly honest, after we finished Season 3, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out,” Cusack said. “But also pretty accomplished.”

The creators stressed the move was about protecting the show’s quality rather than extending its run.

Final episodes already scheduled

Two remaining Season 3 episodes will air April 12 on Adult Swim. Hadel emphasized they are not designed as a grand finale but rather additional standalone adventures.

“This is not a bit,” Hadel told fans in the video. “This is not a joke.”

The pair said they did not want the series to continue in a diminished form or be handed off to a different creative team. Cusack described the show as highly creator driven, noting they have been closely involved in every aspect of production.

Network leaves door open

Adult Swim said it supports the decision and remains open to future collaborations if the creators decide to return.

Cusack and Hadel also hinted that Smiling Friends could come back someday if inspiration strikes, but they did not want to label the current pause as a temporary hiatus.

The series debuted in 2022 and quickly built a strong fan base for its offbeat humor and distinctive animation style.

So, the early ending highlights a growing trend in animation where creators choose shorter, tightly controlled runs rather than long multi-season stretches. For Adult Swim, losing one of its most talked-about recent hits leaves a notable gap in its late-night lineup.

For now, fans will have to wait until April 12 for the show’s final two Season 3 episodes.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, South Carolina. A small earthquake shook parts of the Midlands on Thursday afternoon, with residents across Lexington and Columbia reporting brief but noticeable tremors.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 3.0 just before 12:30 p.m. local time near Lake Murray in Lexington County. Officials initially listed the event at magnitude 3.4 before revising it downward in a later update.

According to USGS data, the epicenter was located about 2.8 miles north of Lexington at a very shallow depth, which can make minor quakes more noticeable at the surface.

Residents in Columbia, Irmo, Seven Oaks, and Oak Grove reported light shaking and rattling windows. One newsroom in Columbia confirmed staff felt the tremor during the midday broadcast window.

While USGS noted the possibility of light damage near the Red Bank and Pelion areas, authorities said no injuries or significant structural damage had been confirmed as of Thursday afternoon.

Small earthquakes in the magnitude 3 range are typically considered minor but can still be felt indoors, especially when they occur at shallow depths.

Officials continue to monitor the situation as more community reports come in.

Hillary Clinton told House investigators she had no knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes during a closed-door deposition in New York. The session briefly paused after a photo leak, as political tensions around the probe continue.

CHAPPAQUA, New York. Hillary Clinton told House investigators Thursday that she had no knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal activities, pushing back sharply against Republican-led scrutiny during a closed-door deposition that briefly descended into procedural drama.

In her opening statement to the House Oversight Committee, the former secretary of state said she had no meaningful connection to Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

“I had no idea about their criminal activities,” Clinton said, adding that she did not recall ever encountering Epstein, flying on his plane, or visiting his properties.

The deposition took place at the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua and is part of a broader congressional effort to examine Epstein’s network and contacts.

In comments after the deposition, Clinton described some of the questioning as “bizarre,” saying she was repeatedly asked about topics she viewed as unrelated to the Epstein investigation.

Photo leak briefly halts testimony

Proceedings were temporarily paused after conservative influencer Benny Johnson posted images of Clinton during the closed-door session. Johnson said the photos were provided by Rep. Lauren Boebert.

Clinton adviser Nick Merrill said the hearing went off the record while officials reviewed how the images were obtained and whether House rules had been violated. The deposition later resumed.

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the committee’s top Democrat, called the photo sharing “unacceptable,” while Boebert defended Johnson online, writing that he “did nothing wrong.”

Political tensions remain high

Committee Chairman James Comer said the deposition was part of a bipartisan effort to understand Epstein’s operations, emphasizing that no one has accused the Clintons of wrongdoing.

Clinton, however, argued the inquiry was misdirected and politically motivated. In her statement, she urged lawmakers to question President Donald Trump directly under oath regarding his past association with Epstein.

President Trump has denied wrongdoing and has never been charged in connection with Epstein. The Clintons have also repeatedly denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.

Bill Clinton is scheduled to give a separate deposition to the committee on Friday, setting up another closely watched session.

The testimony comes amid renewed public focus on the Epstein files following recent document releases and continued pressure on Congress to examine high-profile figures linked to the disgraced financier.

For now, investigators say transcripts and video from the Clinton depositions will be released after review by attorneys.

Jonathan Majors has started filming his first movie since 2023

The untitled action film is produced by The Daily Wire

Production is currently underway in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina. Cameras are rolling again for Jonathan Majors as the actor begins work on his first film in roughly four years, a move that marks a significant moment in his attempt to rebuild his career.

Production started this week on an untitled action movie backed by The Daily Wire and Bonfire Legend. Director Kyle Rankin is helming the project from his own screenplay, with plot details and additional casting still tightly under wraps.

According to early production notes, the film draws inspiration from classic 1980s and 1990s action stories such as Red Dawn and Toy Soldiers, which focused on young protagonists forced to defend against invading forces.

Career reset after legal fallout

Majors’ return comes after a turbulent period. In December 2023, the actor was found guilty of assault and harassment involving his former girlfriend, a case that led to his removal from several high-profile projects, including the Marvel role of Kang.

He was later sentenced to complete a 52 week in person domestic violence intervention program. Since then, the actor has been working to reestablish his footing in the industry.

The new film represents his most concrete step back into production. Majors is also attached to the supernatural revenge thriller Merciless from director Martin Villeneuve, though that project has not yet entered active filming.

Daily Wire backs another comeback

Producers on the new film include Ben Shapiro for The Daily Wire and Dallas Sonnier for Bonfire Legend, alongside Travis Mills, Lillian Campbell, and Sydney Aucreman.

The Daily Wire has previously supported projects featuring actors attempting career rebounds, including Armie Hammer and Gina Carano. Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether Majors’ latest role leads to broader studio opportunities.

For now, the untitled action project remains in early production, with release timing and distribution plans still to be announced.

An unidentified hacker allegedly used Anthropic’s Claude AI to automate attacks on Mexican government systems, stealing about 150GB of data. Security firms say the breach exposed voter and employee records while companies moved to contain misuse.

 Key Points

Hacker reportedly used Anthropic’s Claude to automate cyberattacks

Around 150GB of sensitive Mexican government data was exposed

Companies say accounts were banned and safeguards strengthened

Mexico: A sophisticated cyberattack powered by consumer AI tools has raised fresh alarms about the misuse of large language models after a hacker allegedly stole roughly 150GB of sensitive Mexican government data.

Cybersecurity firm Gambit Security said the activity occurred between December 2025 and January 2026, when an unidentified attacker used Anthropic’s Claude chatbot to help identify vulnerabilities, generate scripts, and automate parts of the intrusion.

According to the firm, the stolen material included taxpayer information, employee credentials, and civil registry data across multiple government entities. Investigators said at least 20 security weaknesses were exploited during the campaign.

“In total, it produced thousands of detailed reports that included ready-to-execute plans,” Curtis Simpson, chief strategy officer at Gambit Security, said in a statement describing the AI-assisted workflow.

How the AI tools were allegedly used

Researchers say the attacker initially bypassed Claude’s safeguards by framing requests as part of a legitimate bug bounty exercise. Once inside the guardrails, the chatbot reportedly generated structured attack guidance that helped map internal systems.

When limitations appeared, the operator allegedly turned to ChatGPT for additional network movement and evasion techniques, creating what analysts described as a multi-tool AI workflow.

OpenAI said its systems detected policy violations and refused harmful requests. Anthropic said it investigated the activity, banned the accounts involved, and strengthened misuse detection in its newer Claude Opus 4.6 model.

Conflicting responses inside Mexico

Mexican authorities have issued mixed public responses. Officials in Jalisco state denied any breach of their systems, while the National Electoral Institute reported no confirmed unauthorized access during the period in question.

However, Gambit Security maintains that multiple federal and state-level vulnerabilities were present, underscoring broader concerns about legacy government infrastructure.

The identity of the hacker remains unknown, and no group has formally claimed responsibility.

Why this matters now

Security experts warn the incident highlights a growing risk as powerful AI tools become widely accessible. Tasks that once required highly specialized skills can now be partially automated through creative prompting, potentially lowering the barrier to sophisticated cybercrime.

For governments and enterprises, the episode serves as an early warning that AI misuse is shifting from theoretical risk to operational reality.

Samsung has launched the Galaxy S26 Ultra featuring a built-in Privacy Display and expanded AI camera tools. The flagship keeps similar hardware but adds smarter software, better night imaging, and stronger on-device privacy controls.

SAN FRANCISCO, California. At its annual Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung pulled the curtain back on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, a flagship phone that puts privacy and artificial intelligence at the center of its upgrade strategy.

The headline feature is a built-in Privacy Display, a hardware-driven screen technology designed to stop shoulder surfers from reading sensitive information. Unlike traditional stick-on filters that dim the screen and interfere with fingerprint sensors, Samsung’s system controls the direction of light from individual pixels.

In practical terms, users can mark specific apps and alerts as private. When enabled, people nearby may see you scrolling photos, but they will not be able to read a banking alert or private message. Samsung says the feature can even activate automatically based on location through its Routines system.

“The benefits are immediately obvious for anyone viewing sensitive documents in public,” the company noted during its demo.

Camera and AI take center stage

While the camera hardware remains largely familiar, Samsung is leaning heavily into AI-powered photography. The Galaxy S26 Ultra retains its 200 megapixel main sensor alongside ultrawide and dual telephoto lenses, but wider apertures now allow more light capture, particularly in low-light scenes.

Samsung says night photography and video have been noticeably improved through advanced noise reduction and color processing. The phone still supports 8K video recording and now adds Log video with built-in LUT tools aimed at serious creators.

A new Horizon Lock stabilization feature keeps footage level even when the phone tilts during action shots, a capability previously common in action cameras.

Generative AI moves deeper into the camera

The biggest software shift comes from generative AI tools built into the Gallery app. With Photo Assist, users can edit images using natural language prompts, move objects between photos, or even change a subject’s outfit digitally.

During the San Francisco showcase, Samsung demonstrated placing a dog from one photo into another image and instantly modifying clothing styles. Early demos appeared realistic, though real-world performance will be closely watched once devices reach reviewers.

Samsung is also expanding AI features across the system, including:

Audio Eraser that removes background noise in videos

An upgraded document scanner that cleans shadows and folds

Screenshot categorization powered by Galaxy AI

AI call screening and scam detection tools

Performance and design refinements

Under the hood, the S26 Ultra runs a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. Samsung claims the processor delivers 19 percent faster CPU speeds, 24 percent faster graphics, and a 39 percent boost in neural processing for AI tasks.

The device is also thinner at 7.9 mm and slightly lighter than the previous model. Charging speeds have improved, with Samsung saying the phone can reach 75 percent battery in about 30 minutes using a 60 watt adapter.

Preorders for the Galaxy S26 lineup are now open in the United States, with general availability scheduled for March 11. The Ultra model remains priced at $1,300.

In a mature smartphone market where breakthrough features are rare, Samsung is betting that privacy-focused hardware and deeper AI integration will give its latest flagship a meaningful edge.

Authorities confirmed warrants but have not disclosed the investigation’s focus.

No arrests announced as the probe into the nation’s second-largest school district continues.

LOS ANGELES: Federal investigators executed search warrants Wednesday at the home and office of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, escalating scrutiny around the nation’s second-largest school system.

The FBI confirmed agents were carrying out court-authorized searches but declined to specify the nature of the investigation or whether Carvalho himself is a target. Justice Department officials also acknowledged the warrants while keeping supporting affidavits sealed.

Television footage from the San Pedro neighborhood showed multiple agents entering and leaving the residence with boxes, while district sources said some employees were evacuated from LAUSD’s downtown administrative offices during the operation.

Carvalho, who has led the district since February 2022, had not issued a public statement as of Wednesday afternoon. District officials likewise did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The probe comes at a sensitive moment for LAUSD, which serves more than 500,000 students across Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The district has recently faced budget pressures and legal challenges, including a dispute over the use of Proposition 28 arts funding.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and cautioned that no conclusions should be drawn from the searches alone. It is not yet clear whether additional locations are involved or if any charges are expected.

More information is expected as federal officials review evidence collected during the searches.

President Donald Trump delivered a record-length State of the Union address, touting economic gains and foreign policy moves while drawing sharp Democratic criticism and intense real-time fact-checking.

 Key Points

President Donald Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address on record at nearly 108 minutes.

The speech focused heavily on the economy, tariffs, and national security.

Democrats sharply criticized several claims as fact-checks continued during the address.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: President Donald Trump delivered the first State of the Union address of his second term Tuesday night, using the nationally televised speech to spotlight economic claims, tariff policy and escalating tensions overseas in a speech that stretched nearly 108 minutes.

The address, delivered inside the House chamber at the U.S. Capitol, stretched to nearly 108 minutes, making it the longest State of the Union speech on record and immediately becoming one of the most searched political events of the year.

Trump focuses on economy and tariffs

Trump repeatedly pointed to what he described as strong economic momentum, telling lawmakers that inflation was falling and that tariffs could eventually replace income taxes.

“As time goes by, I believe tariffs… will substantially replace the modern-day system of income tax,” Trump said during the address.

Economic experts, however, have previously expressed skepticism about whether tariffs could realistically replace federal income tax revenue.

The president also pushed Congress to permanently limit large investors from buying single-family homes, framing the proposal as part of his affordability agenda.

Sharp partisan moments inside the chamber

The speech featured several tense exchanges between Republicans and Democrats, a hallmark of recent State of the Union addresses.

At one point, Trump criticized Democratic lawmakers for remaining seated during Republican applause lines, telling them, “You should be ashamed of yourself not standing up.”

In another notable moment, Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas was escorted out of the chamber after holding up a protest sign as the president entered.

Foreign policy and Iran warning

Trump also addressed global tensions, saying the United States was still pursuing negotiations with Iran but issuing a firm warning.

“My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” he said, adding that the U.S. would never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.

The remarks come amid heightened attention on Middle East policy and potential military decisions later this year.

Fact-checks and live reaction dominate coverage

Even before the speech ended, major U.S. networks and policy groups were issuing live fact-checks of several presidential claims, particularly on inflation, egg prices and religious trends in the United States.

According to federal data cited by analysts, egg prices have declined year over year but not by the full margin Trump suggested.

The unusually long address and combative tone fueled massive live viewership across major U.S. broadcasters and streaming platforms, making the 2026 State of the Union one of the most closely watched political moments of Trump’s second term.

Democrats prepare formal rebuttal

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger is set to deliver the Democratic response following the speech, with Sen. Alex Padilla providing the Spanish-language rebuttal.

With midterm elections now less than nine months away, the address is widely seen as an early attempt by the White House to frame the economic and immigration debate heading into a high-stakes political year.

She was a licensed clinical social worker and advocate

Los Angeles, California: Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of veteran actor and comedian Martin Short, has died at the age of 42, according to a family statement released Tuesday.

A representative for the Short family confirmed the death and asked for privacy as relatives and friends process the loss. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time,” the statement said.

Authorities responded to Katherine Short’s Hollywood Hills residence after reports of an incident. Law enforcement sources cited by multiple media outlets indicated the death is being investigated as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have not released additional public details.

A career focused on mental health

Katherine Short built her professional life far from the entertainment spotlight. She was a licensed clinical social worker based in Los Angeles, focusing on issues including grief, anxiety, depression and relationship challenges.

She earned her undergraduate degree from New York University in 2006 and later completed a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.

Colleagues described her as deeply committed to supporting vulnerable communities. She also worked with the nonprofit Bring Change 2 Mind, which aims to reduce stigma surrounding mental health.

Family background

Katherine was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, actress Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer.

Short, 75, has been touring in recent months alongside longtime collaborator Steve Martin. It remains unclear whether upcoming tour dates will be affected.

Developing story

The family has not released further details about funeral arrangements. More information is expected as officials complete their review.

Alexander Sørloth scored a hat-trick for Atletico Madrid
Johnny Cardoso added a crucial second-half goal
Atletico advanced 7-4 on aggregate against Club Brugge

Madrid, Spain: Under the bright lights of the Wanda Metropolitano, Alexander Sørloth delivered a clinical hat-trick performance Tuesday night to power Atletico Madrid past a stubborn Club Brugge and into the UEFA Champions League last 16.

Diego Simeone’s side, still stung by surrendering a two-goal lead in last week’s 3-3 first leg, responded with urgency and control in front of their home crowd.

Sørloth set the tone in the 23rd minute when he latched onto a long clearance from goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The Norwegian forward steadied himself before firing a low half-volley that slipped under Simon Mignolet’s gloves.

Brugge fight back before halftime

Club Brugge refused to fade quietly. In the 36th minute, defender Joel Ordonez rose highest from a corner, heading home to level the match and briefly silence the Madrid crowd.

Moments later, Hugo Vetlesen nearly stunned the hosts, but Oblak produced a sharp save that proved pivotal.

The match remained finely balanced at the break, with Atletico holding only the narrowest aggregate edge.

Cardoso strike swings momentum

Just three minutes into the second half, United States midfielder Johnny Cardoso produced the moment that shifted the tie decisively.

Collecting the ball outside the box, Cardoso unleashed a fierce low drive that crashed past Mignolet, restoring Atletico’s aggregate control and energizing the home supporters.

It was Cardoso’s first goal for the club and it arrived at a critical moment.

Sørloth seals the night

With Brugge pushing forward late, spaces began to open and Sørloth took full advantage.

The striker doubled his tally in the 76th minute with a composed close-range finish after a slick attacking move. Eleven minutes later, he completed his first Champions League hat-trick, calmly slotting home to cap a dominant display.

“I just tried to stay focused and help the team,” Sørloth said after the match.

The victory ended Atletico’s three-game winless run in the competition and secured a commanding 7-4 aggregate triumph.

Atletico Madrid will now face either Tottenham or Liverpool in the round of 16, a matchup that promises a significant step up in intensity.

For Simeone, the performance offered timely reassurance.

After last week’s defensive wobble, Atletico rediscovered their cutting edge when it mattered most.

WashU issued and later lifted an armed person emergency alert
Police searched Danforth Campus but found no suspect
University confirmed there is no active threat

St. Louis, Missouri: Washington University in St. Louis lifted an emergency alert Tuesday morning after police completed a campus search and found no armed suspect, easing tensions that briefly gripped the Danforth Campus.

The university’s Emergency Management Department issued the all clear at 10:21 a.m., roughly one hour after the initial warning triggered concern among students and staff.

“ALL CLEAR. Police have completed their search of the Danforth Campus and did not locate an armed individual. There is no active threat on campus at this time,” the university said in an official update.

Emergency alert triggered rapid response

The situation began around 9:19 a.m. when WashU warned of reports about a possible armed person on campus.

In its first alert, the university urged people to take immediate precautions, advising: “Run, Hide, or Fight. If hiding, lock or barricade yourself in a room until further notice.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including St. Louis, Clayton and University City police, responded and began sweeping buildings near Brookings Hall and other campus locations.

Heavy police presence reported

Witnesses described a large law enforcement presence as officers with long guns moved through parts of the campus.

By shortly after 10 a.m., some police units were seen returning to their vehicles as the search progressed.

Officials stressed throughout the response that there was no confirmed active shooter.

Campus operations resume

Following the completed search, university officials confirmed normal activities could continue.

The quick all clear helped calm fears after the earlier warning prompted students and staff to shelter in place across the campus.

Authorities have not indicated what initially triggered the armed person report.

The situation remains under review.

Jack Hughes’ patriotic remarks after Team USA win went viral
Some Canadian users urged Tate McRae to dump the NHL star
The backlash appears limited to social media reactions

Milan, Italy: U.S. hockey star Jack Hughes is trending online after his patriotic postgame comments sparked an unexpected social media backlash involving Canadian pop singer Tate McRae.

The reaction followed Team USA’s dramatic gold medal victory over Canada, where Hughes delivered the overtime winner that sealed the championship.

Viral moment after the final horn

In the chaotic moments after the win, Hughes delivered an emotional message that quickly circulated online.

“This is all about our country right now. I love the USA,” Hughes said during postgame celebrations. “I’m so proud to be American today.”

The remarks were widely praised by U.S. fans but also triggered pushback from some Canadian users on social media.

Tate McRae pulled into online debate

As Hughes’ comments spread, attention quickly shifted to his rumored relationship with Canadian singer Tate McRae.

On platforms including X and TikTok, a segment of users jokingly and sometimes sharply urged McRae to “dump” the American hockey star following the USA victory over Canada.

There is no public indication that the singer has responded to the online chatter.

Political angle fuels discussion

The online conversation intensified after reports that Team USA received a congratulatory phone call from President Donald Trump following the win.

Some supporters praised Hughes’ patriotic tone, though there is no verified evidence that the player has publicly aligned himself with Trump politically.

Hughes has previously supported NHL Pride initiatives, reflecting a broader public profile that does not fit neatly into partisan narratives.

Despite the viral noise, the backlash appears confined largely to social media commentary rather than any formal controversy.
Hughes remains widely celebrated for his on-ice performance, while McRae has continued her music schedule without publicly addressing the situation.

For now, the episode highlights how quickly major sports moments can spill into pop culture and online discourse.

Paradise Season 2 is drawing mixed early reviews, with critics warning the Hulu series loses its mystery engine and narrative urgency despite strong performances from Sterling K. Brown.

 Key Points

Critics say Paradise Season 2 loses momentum after strong Season 1
Story shifts from murder mystery to slower survival drama
Sterling K. Brown remains the show’s standout performer

Los Angeles, California: Early reviews of Paradise Season 2 suggest the Hulu thriller may struggle to match the sharp momentum that made its debut season a breakout hit.

Critics who screened the new episodes say the series pivots away from its original murder mystery formula into a slower survival drama, a shift that has divided early viewers.

Mystery engine disappears

Season 1 built its success around a high stakes whodunit inside a post apocalyptic bunker. That narrative engine largely disappears in Season 2, leaving the story searching for a new center of gravity.

Instead of another central murder mystery, the new season expands the world beyond the bunker and introduces multiple new characters. The broader scope adds world building but also slows the pacing.

Industry reviewers note that without the ticking clock of a central mystery, the show sometimes feels directionless.

Sterling K. Brown still anchors the series

Despite structural issues, Sterling K. Brown’s performance as Secret Service agent Xavier Collins continues to draw praise. Critics say he remains the emotional core of the series.

However, his reduced screen time across the early episodes has raised concerns among reviewers who see him as the show’s strongest asset.

New cast additions, including Shailene Woodley’s survivor character Annie, help expand the universe but have received mixed reactions regarding their narrative impact.

Tonal identity under pressure

Analysts say Paradise now appears caught between two identities: the twist heavy thriller that defined Season 1 and a more serious character driven survival drama.

That tonal balancing act has created uneven momentum in early episodes. While the season appears to be building toward a larger payoff, critics say the direction is not yet fully clear.

Release timeline

Paradise Season 2 premieres February 23 with three episodes, followed by weekly releases through the March 30 finale.

A brand new Evangelion anime series is officially in production
Project will be created by Studio Khara and CloverWorks
NieR creator Yoko Taro will handle series composition and script

Tokyo, Japan: The Evangelion franchise is expanding once again, with creators confirming that a completely new anime series is officially in production as part of the brand’s 30th anniversary celebration.

The announcement came during the EVANGELION:30+ anniversary event in Japan, where Studio Khara revealed the new project in partnership with CloverWorks. The news immediately sparked excitement across the global anime community, which has closely followed the franchise since its 1995 debut.

New creative team takes charge

This new chapter will feature a high profile creative lineup. Game writer Yoko Taro, best known for the NieR franchise, will oversee series composition and script duties. Longtime Evangelion veteran Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct alongside Toru Yatabe, while Keiichi Okabe is set to compose the music.

The involvement of Taro is particularly notable. His reputation for complex, emotionally layered storytelling has already generated strong fan interest online.

Industry analysts say the collaboration signals a deliberate attempt to refresh the franchise while preserving its psychological depth. One Tokyo based anime producer noted the pairing is “a bold but logical evolution for Evangelion’s next era.”

Details about the plot, characters, and release window remain tightly guarded. Studio Khara described the announcement as an initial production report, indicating the series is still in early development.
There is also no confirmation yet on how directly the new show will connect to previous Evangelion timelines, which have historically included reboots, alternate continuities, and film retellings.

The announcement arrives as legacy anime franchises are seeing renewed global demand on streaming platforms. Evangelion remains one of the most commercially and culturally influential titles in the medium, and the 30th anniversary milestone creates a natural moment for expansion.
For now, fans are watching closely for the first teaser footage or release window, both of which could significantly boost anticipation in the months ahead.

A powerful East Coast blizzard buried parts of New York under more than 22 inches of snow, grounding thousands of flights and triggering severe travel warnings across the region.

 Key Points

More than 22 inches of snow reported in parts of the East Coast

Over 5,000 flights canceled across major U.S. airports

Officials warn of near impossible travel conditions in New York

New York City: A powerful winter storm slammed the U.S. East Coast on Monday, dumping more than 22 inches of snow in some areas and creating what officials described as near impossible travel conditions across parts of New York.

The National Weather Service reported over 15 inches of snow in Central Park alone, with higher totals recorded across the wider region. Winter storm warnings stretched from North Carolina to northern Maine, while parts of eastern Canada also faced severe conditions.

Flights grounded across major hubs

Air travel across the Northeast was heavily disrupted as the storm intensified. More than 5,000 flights into and out of the United States were canceled by Monday, according to aviation data, with New York area airports among the hardest hit.

At LaGuardia Airport, roughly 98 percent of scheduled flights were scrubbed. Boston Logan International Airport saw more than 90 percent of flights canceled, while Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International also reported widespread disruptions.

Airlines including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines issued travel waivers as carriers attempted to manage the fallout.

Dangerous conditions on the ground

Across New York City, streets were blanketed in shin deep snow as sanitation crews worked extended shifts to clear major routes. Fallen trees and reduced visibility added to the hazards.

“It was eerily quiet along Fifth Avenue,” one field report noted, describing limited pedestrian movement as crews worked to clear sidewalks and roadways.

State officials warned that blowing snow and strong winds could continue to create treacherous conditions even after snowfall slows.

Power outages and emergency alerts

Hundreds of thousands of customers across the region lost electricity as heavy snow and gusty winds weighed down power lines and trees. Officials in New Jersey and Connecticut warned outages could rise as winds strengthen.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said falling trees remain a major concern, calling the situation dangerous for both roads and utilities.

NYC schools to reopen Tuesday

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said public schools will reopen for in-person classes Tuesday after Monday’s full snow day. Officials said crews are working overnight to ensure school routes are safe for students.

Why this storm matters

Forecasters say the system could rival the costly 2021 Groundhog Day nor’easter, which caused about $100 million in damage across the Northeast. This is also the first time in nine years that New York City has been placed under a blizzard warning, underscoring the storm’s severity.

Weather officials continue to urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor local advisories as cleanup efforts continue across the East Coast.

Utah author Kouri Richins faces aggravated murder charges

Prosecutors allege husband was poisoned with fentanyl

Defense says there is zero proof she administered the drug

Park City, Utah: The murder trial of Utah mother and children’s book author Kouri Richins is underway, nearly four years after her husband was found dead in the couple’s bedroom from what authorities say was a massive fentanyl overdose.

Richins, 35, has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, insurance fraud, and forgery. If convicted on the most serious count, she could face life in prison.

Prosecutors allege Richins poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, to gain access to his money and start a new life. During opening statements, chief prosecutor Bradley Bloodworth told jurors the evidence would show the killing was financially motivated.

“She needed Eric Richins’ money to have her fresh start at life,” Bloodworth said in court.

What prosecutors allege

According to court filings, Eric Richins, 39, died on March 4, 2022, after ingesting what the medical examiner determined was five times the lethal dose of fentanyl. Investigators say the drug was illicit and taken orally.

Prosecutors also pointed to the couple’s finances, telling the jury that Richins allegedly carried significant debt while her husband’s estate was valued at about $4 million and insured for more than $2 million.

Authorities further claim there were earlier attempts to poison Eric Richins, including a Valentine’s Day 2022 incident in which he reportedly broke out in hives after eating food his wife prepared.

Defense pushes back

Defense attorney Kathryn Nester told jurors there is no direct evidence proving how fentanyl entered Eric Richins’ system.

“What you will never hear, after four years of investigation, is how that fentanyl got inside of him because there is zero evidence of that,” she argued.

The defense also highlighted Richins’ emotional 911 call the night of her husband’s death, portraying her as a grieving spouse rather than a suspect.

The book that drew national attention

The case drew widespread public interest after Richins published a children’s book titled “Are You With Me?” roughly a year after her husband’s death. She said at the time the book was meant to help her three sons cope with grief.

Prosecutors arrested her in May 2023, weeks after she promoted the book in local media.

Investigation and next steps

Court documents show investigators examined phone searches, financial records, and alleged fentanyl purchases tied to the case. Prosecutors are also seeking to introduce a jailhouse letter they say suggests an attempt to influence testimony.

Richins has repeatedly denied involvement, previously saying she is eager to prove her innocence.

The high profile trial in Summit County is expected to continue in the coming weeks as jurors hear testimony from investigators, medical experts, and family members.

Former UK ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson was arrested in London as part of an investigation linked to newly released Epstein-related material, according to Metropolitan Police.

London: Former UK ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, British authorities confirmed Monday, in a case tied to the wider fallout from material linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police said officers detained a 72-year-old man at an address in Camden and transported him to a London police station for questioning. Authorities also executed search warrants at properties in Camden and Wiltshire as part of the ongoing investigation.

Mandelson, a veteran Labour Party figure and former business secretary, has faced scrutiny following the latest release of Epstein-related files. Investigators are examining allegations that market-sensitive information may have been improperly shared during his time in government.

The arrest marks a dramatic turn in the political career of one of Britain’s most prominent diplomats. Mandelson had already stepped down from the Labour Party and resigned from the House of Lords earlier this month as pressure mounted.

His removal from the ambassadorial post came in September after earlier Epstein documents surfaced, including a handwritten note in which he reportedly referred to Epstein as his “best pal.”

Political pressure builds

The developing scandal has intensified political pressure in the United Kingdom, with opposition figures and some Labour members raising questions about the circumstances surrounding Mandelson’s appointment and subsequent conduct.

Officials have not announced any formal charges, and the investigation remains active.

What happens next

Police said Mandelson remains under investigation as detectives review evidence gathered during the searches and interviews. Further updates are expected as authorities continue to examine the material connected to the Epstein files.

This remains a developing story.

Bitcoin fell under $65,000 as President Donald Trump’s tariff escalation rattled risk markets, with analysts pointing to macro uncertainty and weak liquidity as key drivers of the crypto downturn.

 Key Points

Bitcoin slipped below $65,000 amid renewed tariff uncertainty

Analysts cite weak liquidity and macro risk pressure

Ether and major altcoins also moved lower in broad selloff

In New York trading late Monday, Bitcoin tumbled below the $65,000 mark, extending its recent slide as fresh tariff uncertainty from Washington weighed heavily on risk assets.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency was trading near $64,826, down more than 5 percent on the day, according to market data. The move came shortly after President Donald Trump signaled plans to raise global tariffs to 15 percent, a step that injected new volatility into already fragile crypto sentiment.

Tariff shock rattles crypto confidence

Market watchers say the selloff reflects growing investor caution rather than a single headline shock.

Jeff Mei, chief operating officer at blockchain firm BTSE, said investors are trimming exposure to digital assets amid fears that higher tariffs could trigger broader market weakness.

“We believe the sudden uptick in tariff rates is causing investors to sell crypto assets in anticipation of a more serious market decline,” Mei said.

The drop highlights how closely crypto is now tied to macro policy signals, particularly trade tensions and geopolitical risk.

Bear market signals emerging

Research analysts also pointed to structural weakness in the current crypto cycle.

Markus Thielen of 10x Research said Bitcoin’s decline fits a classic low conviction phase marked by thin liquidity and cautious positioning. He warned the market could test deeper support levels if momentum fails to recover.

Bitcoin is now down roughly 26 percent year to date and more than 47 percent from its October peak above $125,000, underscoring the severity of the correction.

Altcoins follow Bitcoin lower

The weakness was broad across digital assets.

Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency, dropped nearly 6 percent to around $1,865, while other major tokens including XRP, Solana and Dogecoin also posted losses as risk appetite cooled.

At the same time, traditional safe haven assets moved in the opposite direction. Spot gold gained about 1.5 percent Monday, reinforcing the growing divergence between crypto and physical safe havens.

What analysts are watching next

Some strategists argue the pullback may reflect the crypto market’s typical four year cycle rather than purely macro stress.

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan recently noted the current retracement mirrors past post rally corrections, with capital rotating toward artificial intelligence equities and gold.

For now, traders remain focused on three near term risks:

	Further tariff escalation

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East

	Liquidity conditions across crypto markets

Until those pressures ease, analysts expect Bitcoin to remain highly sensitive to macro headlines rather than purely crypto specific catalysts.

The Season 1 finale of HBO’s Knight of the Seven Kingdoms delivers a reflective ending centered on consequences, character growth, and the future of Dunk and Egg rather than major action.

At Summerhall in Westeros, the dust had barely settled when HBO’s Knight of the Seven Kingdoms closed its first season with a restrained but meaningful finale that prioritized character fallout over spectacle.

The episode, titled The Morrow, functions largely as an epilogue following the violent trial by seven that ended with the shocking death of Prince Baelor Targaryen. Instead of escalating the conflict, the finale slows the pace and examines how the event reshapes the futures of Ser Duncan and young Prince Aegon.

Ser Duncan Escapes Formal Punishment
One of the biggest questions heading into the finale was whether Ser Duncan would face consequences for the deadly chain of events. The answer arrives quickly.

From a legal and religious standpoint, Duncan is cleared. The gods have spoken through the trial’s outcome, and no formal punishment is imposed. However, the political tension remains thick.

Prince Valarr openly resents Duncan’s presence at Baelor’s funeral pyre, while Prince Maekar warns that history may judge the hedge knight harshly.

“Each time a battle is lost or a crop fails,” Maekar says, “the fools will say Baelor would not have let that happen.”

That line underscores the episode’s central theme: even when justice is settled, reputations are not.

Dunk and Egg Face a Turning Point
The emotional core of the finale revolves around the future of Dunk and Egg.

Prince Maekar initially pushes Duncan to formally serve House Targaryen and continue training Aegon at Summerhall. Duncan resists at first, clearly exhausted by royal politics.

His blunt remark, “Think I’m done with princes,” briefly disappoints Egg and suggests the partnership may end.

But the turning point comes after Duncan’s encounter with the troubled Prince Daeron, whose cynical warning about the Targaryen family forces Dunk to reconsider.

Recognizing Egg’s need for grounding away from court influence, Duncan ultimately agrees to continue as his knight mentor, preserving the central relationship that drives the series.

Side Characters Get Their Farewell Moments
True to its epilogue structure, the finale also checks in on several supporting characters.

Raymun Fossoway receives a warm send-off after emerging from the trial as a newly minted knight. In a symbolic gesture, Duncan returns Ser Arlan’s old horse, Sweetfoot, ensuring the animal’s peaceful retirement.

Lyonel Baratheon also exits on an upbeat note, maintaining the show’s balance between political tension and character warmth.

These quieter beats reinforce the season’s intentionally intimate tone, a clear contrast to the large scale conflicts typical of the wider Game of Thrones universe.

Season 2 Path Already Taking Shape
The finale subtly sets the stage for what comes next without relying on a heavy cliffhanger.

Dunk’s decision to continue with Egg keeps the narrative engine intact, while dialogue hints that their journey will soon take them toward Dorne. Production on Season 2 is already underway, signaling HBO’s confidence in the slower, character driven approach.

Why This Finale Feels Different
Unlike many franchise finales that chase shock value, The Morrow leans into reflection and reset. The episode prioritizes emotional consequences, mentorship, and reputation over battlefield drama.

For viewers expecting explosive twists, the ending may feel understated. But for fans invested in the personal journey of Dunk and Egg, the finale delivers a clear thematic payoff.

The season closes not with spectacle, but with direction.

The U.S. Embassy has urged Americans in several Mexican states to shelter in place after security operations and cartel-linked disruptions impacted key tourist regions, raising fresh travel safety concerns.

U.S. officials urged Americans in multiple Mexican states to shelter in place after cartel violence.

Disruptions reported in tourist hubs including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Warning follows reports surrounding cartel figure Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes.

MEXICO CITY: U.S. officials issued an urgent security alert Sunday warning American citizens in several Mexican states to shelter in place as cartel related violence and road blockages disrupted parts of the country.

The advisory, released by the U.S. Mission in Mexico, affects wide areas including Jalisco, Baja California and Quintana Roo, covering major tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Cancun and Tulum.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, has long been one of the most wanted cartel leaders.

The warning comes amid heightened tensions following reports surrounding cartel figure Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities have not publicly detailed the full operational picture, but security activity and criminal disruptions have prompted precautionary measures.

According to the embassy notice, all U.S. government personnel at the Consulate General in Tijuana and staff in Guerrero, Michoacan and Quintana Roo were directed to shelter in place. Personnel in Monterrey were instructed to remain within the metropolitan area.

Travel disruptions reported

While airports remain open, officials confirmed that road blockages have begun affecting airline operations. Some domestic and international flights in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were cancelled, and all taxis and ride share services were suspended in Puerto Vallarta.

Local reports also indicated that some businesses temporarily halted operations as security forces responded to unfolding incidents across multiple states.

The advisory has raised fresh concern among travelers planning trips to popular destinations including Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Guadalajara, as authorities continue monitoring cartel related disruptions.

What Americans in Mexico are being told

U.S. officials urged citizens currently in affected areas to take immediate precautions. Guidance includes remaining inside homes or hotels, avoiding areas with visible law enforcement activity, and closely monitoring local media for updates.

Officials also advised Americans to avoid crowds, maintain contact with family members and follow instructions from local authorities. Emergency assistance remains available through U.S. embassy and consular channels.

Situation remains fluid

Mexican authorities have not announced widespread airport closures, but the security environment remains dynamic in several regions. Travel experts note that conditions can change quickly when cartel activity triggers localized disruptions.

For now, the U.S. government says the shelter advisory is precautionary while security operations continue across parts of the country.

Skywatchers across North America will witness a rare blood moon on March 3 as a total lunar eclipse turns the moon deep red during the early morning hours.

New York: Early risers across North America will get a front row seat to one of the year’s most striking sky events when a total lunar eclipse paints the moon deep red on March 3.

The celestial show, often called a blood moon, will unfold during the pre dawn hours, with astronomers saying the dramatic color shift occurs when Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon.

Unlike solar eclipses, the event is completely safe to view with the naked eye, making it accessible to casual skywatchers and seasoned observers alike.

When and where to watch

According to timing projections, the partial eclipse will begin at 4:50 a.m. Eastern Time. Totality, the phase when the moon turns its deepest red, is expected to start at 6:04 a.m. and peak around 6:33 a.m. The moon will gradually exit Earth’s shadow after 7:02 a.m.

North and Central America are expected to have the best visibility, while viewers in Australia and eastern Asia will see the eclipse during evening hours. Much of Europe and Africa will miss the event entirely.

Why the moon turns red

During a total lunar eclipse, sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the moon. Shorter blue wavelengths scatter, while longer red and orange wavelengths pass through and illuminate the lunar surface.

The effect mirrors the colors seen during sunrise and sunset, giving the moon its copper red glow.

The Worm Moon connection

March’s full moon is traditionally known as the Worm Moon, a name rooted in Native American seasonal observations marking the time when thawing soil reveals worm trails and signals the approach of spring.

This combination of the seasonal full moon and total eclipse makes the March event especially notable for skywatchers.

Why this eclipse matters now

Astronomers note this will be the last total lunar eclipse visible worldwide until December 31, 2028, adding urgency for viewers hoping to witness the phenomenon.

Officials recommend finding a dark location away from city lights for the clearest view, though the eclipse will remain visible even in urban areas if skies stay clear.

New York City officials declared a full snow day for public schools Monday as the region braces for its first blizzard warning in nearly a decade, with heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel expected.

New York City: Snow plows lined up across sanitation yards Sunday afternoon as city officials moved into full storm mode, warning residents to prepare for dangerous conditions as a rare blizzard warning blankets the region.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that all New York City public school students will have a full snow day Monday, with no in person or remote classes scheduled. The decision came as forecasts pointed to heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to intensify overnight.

“We are telling New Yorkers to stay safe, stay inside, stay warm,” Mamdani said while outlining the city’s storm preparations.

City activates emergency measures

The National Weather Service has placed New York City under its first blizzard warning in nearly ten years, signaling the potential for whiteout conditions, power disruptions, and severely limited travel visibility.

Officials have already activated the city’s Winter Weather Emergency Plan. A Code Blue alert is in effect, which ensures emergency shelters remain open for vulnerable residents as temperatures drop below freezing.

City leaders said 22 warming buses will be deployed across the five boroughs, and residents can call 311 to locate nearby warming centers.

Sanitation crews prepare for heavy snow

The Department of Sanitation has shifted to 12 hour operations, deploying more than 2,600 workers per shift. More than 1,000 emergency shovelers are also scheduled to begin overnight work as snowfall intensifies.

According to city officials, plows will begin full operations once accumulation reaches two inches. Property owners remain responsible for clearing sidewalks, though the city has expanded geocoded tracking at bus stops, crosswalks, and pedestrian ramps.

Why this storm matters now

Forecasters expect the heaviest snow and strongest winds to hit Sunday night into Monday, raising concerns about the morning commute and potential scattered power outages. It marks the most serious winter weather threat for the city so far this season.

Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor official updates as conditions evolve.

 Key Points:

South Africa defeated India by 76 runs in Ahmedabad.

David Miller top-scored with 63 off 35 balls.

Earlier on-field tension erupted between Washington Sundar and Miller.

Ahmedabad, India: Under the bright lights of the Narendra Modi Stadium, South Africa delivered a commanding performance to defeat India by 76 runs in a high-intensity T20 World Cup 2026 encounter that featured both explosive batting and on-field drama.

The match had already drawn attention after a brief but heated exchange between Washington Sundar and David Miller during the second drinks break. The situation was quickly contained by the on-field umpire and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, but the competitive edge never faded.

https://www.facebook.com/icc/videos/south-africa-take-a-w-against-india-t20wc-2026/1552023469429966/

South Africa’s innings was built around a crucial counterattack after early trouble. Miller led the recovery with a composed yet aggressive 63 off 35 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 180.

Reflecting on the moment, one match observer noted that Sundar had raised concerns about movement at the non-striker’s end, which appeared to trigger the mid-innings tension between the two players.

Brevis provides key support

Young star Dewald Brevis played the perfect supporting role, scoring 45 off 29 balls with three fours and three sixes. His fluent strokeplay helped stabilize the innings and shifted momentum firmly toward South Africa.

The Miller-Brevis partnership added 97 runs at a critical stage, lifting South Africa from early pressure to a strong total of 187 for 7 in 20 overs.

India collapse in chase

India’s reply never gained traction. Chasing 188, the batting lineup struggled against disciplined South African bowling and was eventually bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.

The collapse confirmed a comprehensive 76-run victory for South Africa, underlining the gap between the sides on the night.

Despite the earlier flashpoint between Sundar and Miller, both teams maintained professional composure through the remainder of the contest. The result now adds fresh intrigue to the Super 8 stage of the tournament, where momentum and net run rate could prove decisive.
