Dubai: A highly anticipated public holiday is approaching in the UAE as experts predict that Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday will fall on Thursday, September 4, 2025. The date corresponds to 12 Rabi Al Awwal 1447 AH, based on astronomical forecasts from Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).
Dr Ashraf Tadros, Professor of Astronomy at NRIAG, explained that the full moon of Safar is expected on Saturday, August 9, at 10:57 am, with 100 percent illumination. Given that Safar is projected to last 29 days, Rabi Al Awwal would begin on Sunday, August 24, placing the Prophet’s birthday on the following Thursday.
In the UAE, Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is officially recognized as a public holiday. According to Cabinet Resolution No. (27) of 2024, non-Eid holidays may be shifted to create extended weekends. If the holiday is moved to Friday, residents could enjoy a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday.
The occasion is deeply significant to Muslims worldwide, marked by cultural and spiritual observances. In the Gulf region, including the UAE, it is widely celebrated with community events and official ceremonies.
The moon sighting confirmation for Rabi Al Awwal will determine whether the holiday falls on Thursday or Friday. Either scenario presents the potential for a welcome break for residents, especially those planning family time or short getaways.
The next public holiday following Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is Eid Al Etihad, the UAE National Day, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, December 2 and 3, 2025. The week is expected to be marked with large-scale celebrations across the country.
