India bid farewell to one of its most influential cinema figures on Monday as veteran actor Dharmendra passed away at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. The celebrated star had been unwell for the past month and was undergoing treatment for health complications, according to people close to the family.

The news prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, drawing leading film personalities and political figures to Pawan Hans crematorium, where the actor’s final rites were held. Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Hema Malini and several members of the Deol family were among those present to pay their respects. Security remained tight as crowds gathered outside to honor the legendary performer.

Dharmendra, known fondly as the original He Man of Hindi cinema, appeared in more than 300 films spanning romance, action and comedy. Born in Punjab in 1935, he rose to national prominence in the 1960s after winning a talent contest that brought him to Mumbai. His career soon flourished through landmark roles in films such as Phool Aur Patthar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Chupke Chupke and the all time classic Sholay.

The actor’s influence extended beyond the screen. His charismatic screen presence, raw appeal and warmth earned him an unmatched fan following. His partnership with Hema Malini became one of Bollywood’s most celebrated collaborations, and his children Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Esha Deol later carried forward the family’s strong cinematic tradition.

Tributes poured in from across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him an iconic figure who brought depth and charm to every role. Actors and filmmakers described him as a gentle soul, a generous mentor and a performer whose legacy shaped generations of artists.

Dharmendra’s final film, Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan and featuring Agastya Nanda, is set for release next month, marking the last chapter of his celebrated journey.
