Shubman Gill Breaks Records With Unbeaten 269 as India Dominate England in Second Test at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten 269—the highest score by an Indian captain and on English soil—guiding India to 587 and total control over England in the 2nd Test.

ecord-Breaking Shubman Gill Puts India in Command at Edgbaston With Majestic 269*

Shubman Gill delivered a once-in-a-generation performance at Edgbaston, crafting a masterful 269* to lead India into a dominant position against England on Day 2 of the second Test. The 24-year-old shattered multiple records, including the highest score by an Indian captain and the highest Test score by an Indian batter in England.

At tea, India stood at 564 for 7, with Gill walking off unbeaten after anchoring the innings across three consecutive sessions. His innings surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 and Virat Kohli’s 254*, marking a new peak in Indian Test batting achievements on English soil.

Gill’s batting was a masterclass in precision and patience. He forged a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and another 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar (42). Driving through the covers, working gaps square of the wicket, and pulling short balls with confidence, Gill barely offered a false shot in an eight-and-a-half-hour epic that featured 30 fours and 3 sixes.

England’s bowlers looked toothless for much of the day, with Joe Root’s part-time off-spin claiming the lone wicket of the session—Washington Sundar—just before tea. Shoaib Bashir toiled without success, while Stokes rotated through his bowling options, even calling on Harry Brook.

After declaring on 587, India’s bowlers immediately struck hard. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, debutant Akash Deep dismissed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for golden ducks in consecutive deliveries. Mohammed Siraj then removed Zak Crawley, leaving England’s top three dismantled at 32 for 3.

Harry Brook and Joe Root offered some resistance, guiding England to stumps at 77 for 3. Brook, however, narrowly avoided disaster late in the session, nearly dragging a delivery into his stumps with his shoulder.

The hosts now face an uphill battle. India’s mammoth first-innings total is the highest any team has posted against England since the beginning of the Bazball era. With their top order cracked open and India firmly in control, this Test match may already be slipping away from Stokes' side.
