Australia Name Spin-Heavy Provisional Squad for T20 World Cup 2026

Australia have unveiled a provisional 15-man squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, backing key returning players and opting for a spin-focused lineup suited to subcontinent conditions.

Australia have announced a provisional 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, signaling a clear focus on adaptability to conditions in India and Sri Lanka while placing confidence in several senior players returning from injury.

Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, with Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly included after missing Australia’s most recent T20 series against India. The selection panel has balanced experience with versatility, leaning heavily into spin options expected to be critical on slower, turning pitches.

The squad features frontline spinners Adam Zampa and Matthew Kuhnemann, supported by spin-capable all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short and Connolly. Kuhnemann shapes as one of the more notable inclusions, having limited experience in the T20 format but earning trust due to his effectiveness in subcontinent conditions.

Australia’s pace attack is led by Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis, with Xavier Bartlett included following the retirement of Mitchell Starc from T20 internationals and an injury setback to Spencer Johnson. Selectors opted against a left-arm fast bowler, favoring balance and flexibility instead.

Josh Inglis has been named as the squad’s sole specialist wicketkeeper, while the batting group is bolstered by Travis Head, Tim David and Marcus Stoinis, offering a mix of power and experience through the middle order.

Chair of selectors George Bailey said the squad reflects Australia’s recent success in the format and the need to plan specifically for Asian conditions, while acknowledging that fitness remains a factor for several players.

Cummins, Hazlewood and David are all continuing their recovery programs, with selectors expressing confidence they will be available for the tournament. The squad remains provisional, allowing for changes if required closer to the event.

Australia are yet to confirm a separate squad for the three-match T20 series against Pakistan scheduled ahead of the World Cup, which is expected to provide final preparation before the tournament begins.
