Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have separated after nine years together, confirming the decision in a joint statement that emphasizes their shared commitment to raising their son.

The former couple told People that while the split marks the end of a significant chapter, their priority remains their eight-year-old son, Lars. They said they feel grateful for their family and intend to continue co-parenting in a supportive and respectful manner.

Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, began dating after meeting through mutual friends in 2014. They welcomed their son in 2017, just days before Gibson received an Academy Award nomination for best director for his film Hacksaw Ridge. Despite keeping much of their relationship private, they occasionally appeared together at major industry events, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards.

The separation, which occurred quietly about a year ago, comes after a period of personal challenges. In January 2025, Gibson confirmed that his Malibu home was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires. Speaking on Elizabeth Vargas Reports, he said his foremost concern was the safety of his family, noting that everyone, including their animals, was able to evacuate safely.

Gibson, who has eight older children from previous relationships, continues to work on upcoming projects, including The Resurrection of the Christ, a follow-up to his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. Ross remains active as a screenwriter and director.

While their romantic relationship has ended, both Gibson and Ross made clear that their shared role as parents will continue, grounded in stability and mutual respect for their son.
