Key Points

  • CJNG leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes was reportedly killed during a February 2026 raid in Mexico

  • Investigators are examining possible cryptocurrency assets linked to cartel finances

  • Past government operations show billions of dollars in Bitcoin have been seized from criminal networks

Washington: Investigators are examining potential cryptocurrency assets linked to the financial network of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), following reports of his death earlier this year during a security operation in Mexico.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the scale of any digital assets tied to the cartel leader. However, security analysts say criminal organizations increasingly use cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin to move and store wealth beyond traditional banking systems.

CJNG is widely considered one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world, with operations spanning North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Growing Use of Cryptocurrency by Criminal Networks

Law enforcement agencies say organized crime groups have increasingly turned to cryptocurrency for financial transactions.

According to blockchain analytics firms including Chainalysis, cryptocurrency has been used in ransomware payments, fraud schemes, and narcotics trafficking operations.

Bitcoin remains the most widely used digital asset for these activities because it can be transferred globally without relying on banks or traditional financial intermediaries.

Despite that advantage, investigators note that blockchain transactions leave permanent records, which often allows authorities to trace funds over time.

Major Bitcoin Seizures in Criminal Cases

Several major law enforcement actions over the past decade have demonstrated how authorities can eventually track and seize cryptocurrency connected to criminal activity.

Among the largest confirmed seizures:

Silk Road case (2021): U.S. authorities seized approximately 50,676 Bitcoin, valued at about $3.36 billion at the time, from an individual linked to the dark web marketplace.

Bitfinex hack recovery (2022): The U.S. Department of Justice recovered roughly 94,643 Bitcoin, valued at about $3.6 billion, connected to the 2016 cryptocurrency exchange hack.

Prince Group seizure (2025): Authorities seized around 127,000 Bitcoin, worth approximately $15 billion, linked to a massive international scam network operating from Southeast Asia.

These operations highlight the increasing role of cryptocurrency investigations in global law enforcement.

Claims About Massive Cartel Bitcoin Holdings

Following reports of El Mencho’s death, some online posts claimed that authorities had seized as much as $10 billion worth of Bitcoin linked to the cartel leader.

However, officials have not confirmed such a seizure.

Experts caution that large claims circulating on social media often exaggerate or misinterpret ongoing financial investigations.

“If such an amount were confirmed, it would represent one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures ever recorded,” said a blockchain security analyst who studies organized crime financing.

Digital Assets and Cartel Finances

Cartels traditionally relied on cash smuggling and offshore financial networks to move profits from drug trafficking.

In recent years, investigators say some criminal organizations have begun experimenting with cryptocurrency storage systems, including cold wallets and multi-signature accounts designed to protect large holdings.

These technologies can complicate enforcement efforts, though blockchain tracing tools have also improved significantly.

Authorities say financial investigations into cartel networks are ongoing, and any confirmed digital asset seizures would likely be handled through federal forfeiture procedures.
