Amanda Knox and Monica Lewinsky are stepping into the spotlight together, this time on their own terms. The two women, whose names became synonymous with sensational headlines decades apart, have joined forces to executive produce Hulu’s upcoming limited series The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

The pair appeared on Good Morning America on Monday, where they discussed the project and the personal parallels that brought them together.

“I had a first-look television deal at the time, and I thought, aha — another young woman who had suffered in the media, had been feasted on on the world stage,” said Lewinsky, 52. “Luckily, like a savvy executive, she got all the yeses, and we were off to the races.”

Lewinsky became a household name in the late 1990s when her relationship with then-President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment. Since then, she has reshaped her public image into that of an activist and producer, often using her platform to highlight issues of media exploitation and public shaming.

Knox, now 38, first drew international attention in 2007 after her roommate Meredith Kercher was murdered while they studied in Italy. Knox was convicted in 2009 alongside Raffaele Sollecito, but their convictions were overturned in 2011. A lengthy legal battle followed, with Knox ultimately acquitted in 2015 after serving four years in prison.

Despite the differences in their stories, both women said they found common ground in the way their lives were transformed by the media. “We were both interrogated. We’ve both been viciously turned into characters of ourselves in the press,” Knox explained. “The thing we were most interested in was making sure this show had a wider lens.”

Knox added that the series is more than a courtroom drama. “It’s a personal journey that looks at what happens before and after the worst experience of your life.”

Lewinsky echoed that sentiment, noting the broader message they hope to convey. “What happens is all women internalize that message and all women end up as collateral damage,” she said. “I think for young people, or I hope for young people, it’s also a message that you can get through it.”

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres Wednesday on Hulu.
