FX has decided not to renew its acclaimed comedy English Teacher for a third season, marking the end of one of the network’s most talked-about comedies in recent years. The series, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, premiered to glowing reviews and maintained outstanding scores across both seasons, with a 98% rating for Season 1 and a perfect 100% for Season 2 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in Austin, the show followed Evan Marquez (played by Alvarez), a gay high school English teacher struggling to balance his professional responsibilities, personal life, and the complex dynamics of students, parents, and colleagues. The cast also included Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher, all of whom helped bring the show’s distinct blend of satire and sincerity to life.
Despite its critical success and loyal audience, English Teacher faced challenges behind the scenes. Allegations surfaced in early 2025 against Alvarez, made by former collaborator Jon Ebeling, who claimed misconduct during the filming of an earlier web series. FX addressed the matter publicly, stating that the network had reviewed the allegations prior to launch and found no reason to halt production. However, the controversy coincided with the show’s second season release and may have influenced internal decisions about its future.
FX did not provide an official explanation for the cancellation, but industry observers note that while the series had a passionate fanbase, it struggled to achieve strong overall viewership. The network had previously taken several months after the first season finale before confirming a renewal, suggesting hesitation about the show’s long-term commercial viability.
Produced by FX Productions, English Teacher was executive produced by Alvarez alongside Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender, and Zach Dunn. Across its two-season run, the show earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, and Writers Guild of America Awards, cementing its status as a critical favorite.
Although English Teacher has come to an end, its impact on modern television comedy remains significant. It pushed boundaries in representation, explored contemporary issues with wit and depth, and left a lasting impression on viewers who connected with its heartfelt and unfiltered portrayal of life in and out of the classroom.
