Rebecca Gayheart has spoken candidly about how her relationship with Eric Dane has changed, describing a bond rooted in family rather than romance as they navigate life following their separation and his recent health crisis.
In a personal essay for The Cut, the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress explained that while she and Dane are no longer romantically involved, their connection remains strong and enduring. The pair married in 2004 and share two daughters. They separated several years ago and have lived apart, but never fully severed ties.
Gayheart wrote that their relationship has been complex and, at times, difficult, noting that they both moved forward with their lives independently. Despite that distance, she said the love they share today is familial, built on years of shared history and parenthood.
That bond was tested in a profound way when Dane disclosed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Gayheart recalled receiving the call while at home with one of their daughters, saying the moment was emotionally overwhelming for both of them. She described the initial symptoms that prompted medical visits and the shock that followed confirmation of the illness.
Dane later shared his diagnosis publicly in April 2025, telling People that he was grateful for the support of his family and hoped to continue working. The actor, known for roles in Grey’s Anatomy and HBO’s Euphoria, asked for privacy as they adjust to what he called a new chapter.
ALS is a rare, progressive neurological disease that affects muscle control and has no known cure. Gayheart acknowledged that understanding the seriousness of the condition made the news even harder to process, but emphasized that their shared focus remains on supporting their children and one another.
Reflecting on their journey, Gayheart wrote that while their marriage has ended, the family they created continues to define their relationship, one grounded in care, responsibility, and mutual respect.
