Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel to the psychological thriller The Housemaid following its strong performance at the global box office, cementing the film as one of the breakout hits of the holiday season.

The studio announced that the follow-up film, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, will enter production later this year. The sequel is based on the second novel in author Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy and is already in active development.

Released less than three weeks ago, The Housemaid has grossed more than 75 million dollars in North America and approximately 133 million dollars worldwide. The film was produced on a relatively modest budget of 35 million dollars, making its rapid commercial success especially notable.

Sydney Sweeney is expected to return in the lead role and will also serve as an executive producer on the sequel. Director Paul Feig is also slated to return, along with screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who will once again adapt McFadden’s novel for the screen.

In the original film, Sweeney portrayed Millie, a young woman with a troubled past who accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy couple played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. The story unfolds into a tense psychological game as dark secrets inside the household come to light. Michele Morrone played Enzo, the groundskeeper who becomes a key figure in Millie’s journey.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said audience response to the film made the decision to move forward clear, citing both box office results and strong engagement from viewers worldwide. Studio executives noted that interest in continuing Millie’s story has been consistent since the film’s release.

The success of The Housemaid marks a significant box office milestone for Sweeney, following a quieter theatrical showing for her recent dramatic projects. With a sequel now officially underway, the franchise is positioned to expand into a multi-film series aligned with McFadden’s original trilogy.

The Housemaid’s Secret is expected to continue Millie’s story with a new setting and new characters, while maintaining the suspense driven tone that resonated strongly with audiences.
