The Academy Awards nomination list for 2026 has triggered intense debate across Hollywood, with several expected contenders missing out and unexpected names rising to the top.

The biggest surprise was the complete shutout of Wicked: For Good. Despite strong performances from Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, neither actress received a nomination. The sequel also failed to secure recognition in any category, marking a sharp contrast to the original film’s success in 2025.

Paul Mescal was another notable omission. After earning widespread acclaim for his role in Hamnet, many expected him to secure his second Oscar nomination. His absence has been widely described as one of the morning’s most shocking snubs.

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt also missed out for The Smashing Machine, despite earlier Golden Globe nominations and strong critical reception. Meanwhile, George Clooney and Adam Sandler were overlooked for Jay Kelly, further fueling conversation around shifting Academy preferences.

In contrast, Sinners dominated the nominations with a record 16 nods, becoming the most nominated film in Oscar history. Industry insiders say its momentum could challenge One Battle After Another in the closely watched Best Picture race.

International cinema also made a strong showing, with non English language films earning 22 nominations across multiple categories. This reflects the Academy’s increasingly global membership and evolving voting trends.

Kate Hudson emerged as one of the morning’s biggest success stories. Her performance in Song Sung Blue earned her a Best Actress nomination, making her a two time Oscar nominee after a 25 year gap since Almost Famous.

Analysts also noted growing fatigue toward sequels, as Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash both underperformed in nominations. Voters appear increasingly drawn to originality rather than franchise extensions.

With voting rules tightening and the Academy pushing members to view all nominated films, the final Oscar outcome remains unpredictable. For now, Sinners and One Battle After Another stand as the two clear frontrunners heading into the final phase of awards season.
