Comedian Ricky Gervais sparked fresh controversy after taking aim at Grammy winners who used their acceptance speeches to make political statements.
Gervais shared a quote from his 2020 Golden Globes monologue in which he warned celebrities not to use award stages as platforms for political lectures. Posting the image on social media, he added the caption, “They’re still not listening,” following several politically charged speeches at this year’s Grammy Awards.
During the ceremony, multiple artists spoke out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies. Bad Bunny, who won Best Música Urbana Album, declared “ICE out” in his speech and called for unity and compassion. Billie Eilish also criticized ICE at the end of her acceptance remarks, drawing loud applause inside the arena.
The Grammys host Trevor Noah added humor to the moment by joking about Nicki Minaj, saying she was not present because she was at the White House discussing “very important issues.” His comment received cheers from the audience.
Gervais’ post quickly went viral, attracting both support and criticism. Some followers agreed with his stance that award shows should focus on entertainment rather than politics. Others accused him of repeating an old joke and criticized him for targeting artists who used their platform to express personal views.
Several commenters pointed out that Gervais himself was quoting his own past material, calling the move unnecessary and outdated. Others defended the musicians, saying award speeches have long been used to address social and political concerns.
The exchange highlighted the continuing tension between celebrity activism and public expectations of entertainment events. While some viewers welcomed outspoken messages from artists, others echoed Gervais’ view that award ceremonies should avoid political debate.
