Los Angeles: Speaking during a live podcast recording attended by hundreds of fans, actor Laura Dern reflected on the cultural impact of appearing in the landmark 1997 episode of the sitcom Ellen, describing the moment as both historic and personally transformative.
Dern appeared in the two-part episode in which comedian and actor Ellen DeGeneres publicly came out through her character, marking the first time a lead television character openly identified as gay on a prime-time series. Nearly three decades later, Dern said the experience still stands as one of the most meaningful chapters of her career.
“I had the honor and privilege of being part of Ellen DeGeneres’ coming-out episode. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life,” Dern said, recalling the emotional moment she shared onscreen with DeGeneres during the pivotal scene.
While the episode is now widely recognized as a turning point for LGBTQ representation in mainstream television, Dern explained that the immediate reaction in 1997 was far from celebratory. Cast members faced bomb threats, increased security measures, and the loss of advertising sponsors in the months following the broadcast, highlighting the cultural resistance present at the time.
Dern said she continues to meet fans who tell her the episode helped them understand their identity or find the courage to come out, reinforcing her belief that storytelling often leads social change rather than follows it. She added that real progress often begins when individuals are willing to take the first step, even before broader society is ready to accept it.
