Burbank, California: Pixar has unveiled the first full trailer for Toy Story 5, and the familiar question returns with a modern twist. What is a toy’s purpose in a world dominated by screens.
Seven years after Toy Story 4, Woody and Buzz Lightyear reunite as Bonnie becomes absorbed by a new smart device called Lilypad. The trailer frames the conflict less as a villain story and more as a cultural shift, with electronics threatening to replace imagination-driven play.
Buzz rallies the gang, including Jessie, Forky, Hamm and Trixie, as they attempt to win back their place in Bonnie’s life. The footage hints at a large scale rescue mission, complete with an army of Buzz Lightyear toys and new characters designed to reflect the digital age.
Director Andrew Stanton, who previously helmed Finding Nemo and WALL E, said the film explores “an existential reckoning for toys facing obsolescence.” Rather than presenting technology as pure evil, the story examines how childhood has evolved and what that means for longtime favorites.
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz, joined again by Joan Cusack, Blake Clark and Tony Hale. Greta Lee voices Lilypad, the sleek smart tablet that captivates Bonnie’s attention, while Conan O’Brien joins the cast as Smarty Pants.
New additions include Craig Robinson as Atlas, a talking GPS hippo toy, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase, a character wary of modern gadgets. Scarlett Spears and Mykal Michelle Harris voice child characters connected to the new storyline.
The sequel follows the emotional ending of Toy Story 4, when Woody chose independence over remaining in Bonnie’s toy chest. How that decision shapes his reunion with Buzz remains one of the film’s central mysteries.
The timing is notable. As tablets and interactive devices increasingly shape how children spend free time, Toy Story 5 taps into a real world conversation about play, creativity and attention spans. Pixar’s previous release, Inside Out 2, generated more than $1.5 billion globally in 2024, signaling renewed momentum for the studio.
Toy Story 5 opens in theaters on June 19, positioning the franchise once again at the center of the summer movie season.
