The Night Agent Season 4 Writers Room Active Ahead of S3

Key Points

  • Writers room for Season 4 is underway despite no official renewal yet.

  • Season 3 premieres Feb. 19 with a shorter gap than previous seasons.

  • Creator Shawn Ryan says Netflix aims to maintain a yearly release cadence.

Los Angeles, California: Even before Season 3 of The Night Agent reaches audiences, work has quietly begun on a potential fourth installment.

Creator Shawn Ryan confirmed that while Netflix has not officially renewed the political action thriller for Season 4, a writers room has already been assembled in 2025. Scripts are in development and storylines are being shaped, positioning the series to move quickly if a formal greenlight arrives.

“Season 4 is not officially picked up yet, but a while ago they did quietly pick up a writers room,” Ryan said in a recent interview. “We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, we are breaking stories.”

The timing is strategic. Sony Pictures Television secured a $31.6 million tax credit in November to shift production from New York to Los Angeles. The incentive comes with a six month deadline to begin filming, creating momentum behind early development efforts.

Aiming for yearly momentum

Netflix previously renewed Season 3 more than three months before Season 2 premiered, following the breakout success of the show’s debut. Season 1 generated 98.2 million views within its first 91 days, placing it among Netflix’s most watched English language series. Season 2 delivered 53.2 million views over 159 days.

Netflix executives are reportedly waiting to evaluate Season 3’s performance before committing to Season 4. Ryan, however, believes the platform is focused on minimizing long breaks between seasons.

“To Netflix’s credit, they want to make sure that the creative side of things is always buttoned up before committing that amount of money,” Ryan said. “My guess is, sometime in the next few weeks up to a month, they’ll make a decision.”

After a 22 month gap between Seasons 1 and 2, partly due to the writers strike, Season 3 will arrive less than 13 months after Season 2. Maintaining that yearly cadence remains a priority despite producing 10 episodes per season, slightly above the streaming norm of eight.

Ryan, a veteran of network television, dismissed concerns about the pace. “This cadence is easy,” he said, noting that during his earlier broadcast career he produced up to 44 episodes in a single calendar year.

Season 3 raises the stakes

Season 3 premieres Feb. 19 and picks up with Peter Sutherland fully immersed in his role as a Night Action operative.

In the opening minutes of the new season, viewers are taken back to Peter’s childhood. In a quiet living room scene, his mother asks him to promise he will always do the right thing, even when it is difficult. The moment establishes the moral code that continues to define the character.

Actor Gabriel Basso says Peter is now more focused than ever. “I think now that Peter isn’t having to balance his personal life and work life, he’s become more monomaniacal,” Basso said. “Whether that’s a defense mechanism or whether it’s for the better, I guess it’s up to the viewer to decide.”

Season 3 quickly moves into high stakes territory, including a covert intelligence exchange and a missile strike on a commercial flight that escalates global tensions. Basso hinted that Peter’s willingness to operate outside traditional boundaries could put him on a collision course with his own government.

Why this matters now

With streaming platforms tightening budgets and canceling series more aggressively, early development without formal renewal signals confidence in the franchise’s durability. If Netflix officially greenlights Season 4 within weeks, The Night Agent could solidify itself as one of the platform’s rare annual returning tentpoles.

Season 3 of The Night Agent debuts Feb. 19.
