Key Points

  • Cillian Murphy returns as Tommy Shelby in The Immortal Man.

  • Film set in Birmingham during World War Two.

  • Movie releases March 6 in select theaters, March 20 on Netflix.

Birmingham, England: Smoke rises over bomb-scarred streets as Tommy Shelby steps back into Small Heath, older and visibly worn by exile. The first full trailer for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man signals a darker chapter for the Shelby family, set against the chaos of World War Two.

Cillian Murphy reprises his role as the gang leader, now facing both personal reckoning and political upheaval. In one of the trailer’s final moments, Tommy reflects on the cost of ambition. “Once, I nearly got everything,” he says over a glass of whiskey. “But nearly doesn’t count.”

The film unfolds in 1940, with Britain under threat and fascism spreading across Europe. Production notes describe Shelby as “driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet.”

The full trailer is available below.

A fractured family

The emotional center of the story appears to be Tommy’s strained relationship with his son, Duke Shelby, played by Barry Keoghan. Introduced in the series’ final season, Duke now runs the Peaky Blinders “like it’s 1919 all over again,” according to Ada Shelby, portrayed again by Sophie Rundle.

Rebecca Ferguson joins the cast as a mysterious new figure who warns Tommy: “You live in a house haunted by ghosts… You abandoned your kingdom. And you abandoned your son.”

Duke’s vulnerability opens the door to manipulation. Tim Roth appears as an English officer who privately pressures Duke to commit treason in support of Germany. “I need to know that you are willing to take part in an act of treason that will decide this war,” he tells him in the trailer.

Duke replies bluntly, “The world don’t give a damn about me.”

War, politics and legacy

Stephen Graham returns as Hayden Stagg, confronting Tommy about whether this is still his fight. “I’ve heard you decided this wasn’t your war,” Stagg says.

“It is now,” Tommy answers.

The wartime setting raises the stakes beyond Birmingham’s streets. Tommy’s past clashes with a global conflict, forcing him to choose between retreat and responsibility.

The soundtrack continues the series’ signature modern edge. The trailer features “Puppet” by Grian Chatten of Fontaines D.C., alongside contributions from artists linked to the show’s earlier soundscape, including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Release details

Written by series creator Steven Knight and directed by Tom Harper, The Immortal Man marks the franchise’s transition from television to cinema.

The film opens in select theaters March 6 and begins streaming on Netflix March 20. After the movie, the Peaky Blinders universe is expected to continue with a new television chapter focusing on the next Shelby generation in the postwar era.

For longtime viewers, the central question is not whether Tommy Shelby returns to power, but what remains of the man behind the flat cap.
