Evening viewers across multiple regions found their YouTube homepages suddenly empty Tuesday as a technical issue disrupted the platform’s recommendation systems, triggering widespread access problems across the app and website.
Outage-tracking services recorded more than 300,000 user complaints within a short period, with many reporting missing homepage content, inaccessible subscription feeds, and issues loading Shorts. Despite the disruption, some users were still able to watch videos using direct links or embedded players, indicating the problem was limited primarily to recommendation and discovery systems.
“We’re aware some users are having issues accessing YouTube right now,” the company said in an initial statement as engineers worked to diagnose the issue. Later, the platform confirmed that a malfunction in its recommendation infrastructure prevented videos from appearing across multiple services, including the main YouTube app, YouTube Kids, and YouTube Music.

By late evening, YouTube reported that the homepage had been restored and that most platform features were functioning again, although engineers continued working on a full system fix to stabilize recommendations. The disruption lasted roughly two hours for many users before services returned to normal.
Technology analysts note that outages affecting recommendation systems can significantly impact user engagement because discovery features drive a large share of video traffic. The incident also highlighted how dependent global audiences have become on the platform for entertainment, news, and live streaming, with social media quickly filling with complaints and screenshots from users experiencing blank feeds during the outage.
