Demond Wilson, best known for his role as Lamont Sanford on the classic NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, has died at the age of 79, according to confirmation from his family.
Wilson’s son, Demond Wilson Jr., told media outlets that the actor was pronounced dead on Friday morning at his home in Palm Springs, California. He said his father passed away due to complications related to cancer, though the specific type of cancer was not disclosed.
“I loved him. He was a great man,” Wilson Jr. said in a brief tribute.
Born Grady Demond Wilson, the actor rose to fame in the 1970s for his portrayal of Lamont Sanford, the hardworking and often exasperated son of Fred Sanford, played by Redd Foxx. The show aired from 1972 to 1977 and became one of the most successful sitcoms of its era, helping redefine African American representation on American television.
After Sanford and Son, Wilson continued working in television and film. He later starred in the short-lived series The New Odd Couple and appeared in movies including Me and the Kid in 1993.
His final screen appearance came in the 2023 drama Eleanor’s Bench, marking a return to acting after nearly two decades away from the spotlight.
Wilson began performing at a young age, appearing on Broadway and at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre during his teenage years. His long career spanned more than five decades, earning him respect as both a stage and screen performer.
Tributes from fans and fellow actors have poured in, remembering him for his warmth, humor and lasting contribution to television history.
