Los Angeles, California: Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of veteran actor and comedian Martin Short, has died at the age of 42, according to a family statement released Tuesday.

A representative for the Short family confirmed the death and asked for privacy as relatives and friends process the loss. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time,” the statement said.

Authorities responded to Katherine Short’s Hollywood Hills residence after reports of an incident. Law enforcement sources cited by multiple media outlets indicated the death is being investigated as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have not released additional public details.

A career focused on mental health

Katherine Short built her professional life far from the entertainment spotlight. She was a licensed clinical social worker based in Los Angeles, focusing on issues including grief, anxiety, depression and relationship challenges.

She earned her undergraduate degree from New York University in 2006 and later completed a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.

Colleagues described her as deeply committed to supporting vulnerable communities. She also worked with the nonprofit Bring Change 2 Mind, which aims to reduce stigma surrounding mental health.

Family background

Katherine was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, actress Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer.

Short, 75, has been touring in recent months alongside longtime collaborator Steve Martin. It remains unclear whether upcoming tour dates will be affected.

Developing story

The family has not released further details about funeral arrangements. More information is expected as officials complete their review.
