The opening day of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens delivered a gripping contest marked by early South African confidence and a strong Indian response. After winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat, hoping to take advantage of a fresh Kolkata surface in the venue’s first Test match since 2019.

Ryan Rickelton set the tone with fluent stroke play, while Aiden Markram settled in after a patient start. The pair controlled the first session until Jasprit Bumrah delivered two outstanding deliveries that removed both openers and changed the rhythm of the innings. Bumrah’s new ball spell was a reminder of his value, especially as India leaked runs from the opposite end.

Temba Bavuma, returning as captain, lasted only a brief period. Kuldeep Yadav produced a sharp legbreak that trapped him, continuing his impressive form from the West Indies series where he claimed twelve wickets. With their captain gone early, South Africa were forced into a cautious rebuild led by Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi. Both players, touring India for the first time in Tests, steadied the innings with a patient stand that carried the visitors past the hundred mark.

India entered this match with a bold combination that included four spinners. Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav provided a varied spin attack tailored to the conditions. Washington also carried added responsibility, positioned at number three in the batting order as part of India’s long term planning. His selection reflects the management’s belief in his all round potential.

Mohammed Siraj struggled to find rhythm in his initial spells, which put added pressure on the spinners to tighten control. Jadeja threatened de Zorzi with a skidding delivery that nearly produced an lbw, while Axar Patel worked into his groove after an uncertain start.

South Africa entered the series without Kagiso Rabada, who was ruled out with a rib injury and replaced by Corbin Bosch. Their bowling unit includes two specialist spinners in Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj, a sign of respect for the turning conditions expected later in the match.

The match carries added importance with Kolkata returning as a Test venue and Guwahati preparing to host its first men’s Test later in the month. Both teams arrived with recent momentum, with India sweeping West Indies two nil and South Africa holding Pakistan to a one all draw away from home.

As play progressed, India’s disciplined spells after the first hour brought balance back into the contest. With South Africa at 105 for 3 at lunch, the stage was set for a compelling day of shifts in momentum, tactical adjustments and individual brilliance.
