have confirmed that Ruben Amorim has stepped down from his role, bringing an end to a short and turbulent tenure at Old Trafford.
In an official statement, the club said Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, led United to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao but leaves with the team sitting sixth in the Premier League. Club officials said the decision was made to give the squad the best possible chance of improving its league position in the final stretch of the season.
The announcement drew attention for referring to Amorim as “head coach,” a detail that followed public comments from the Portuguese manager after a recent draw with Leeds, where he insisted he had been hired as the club’s manager rather than a coach. That distinction had highlighted internal tension during his final days in the role.
United confirmed that Darren Fletcher will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, beginning with Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley. Fletcher is also expected to be on the bench for Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Brighton.
Amorim’s exit adds to growing instability among top English clubs. With United now under interim leadership, the Premier League currently has two of its traditional Big Six sides without permanent managers. Chelsea are also operating on an interim basis following the departure of Enzo Maresca.
In their statement, United thanked Amorim for his contribution and wished him success in the future. The club has not yet indicated a timeline for appointing a permanent successor.
