England captain Ben Stokes had the decisive say after a brief but heated exchange with Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne during day two of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney, dismissing him moments later in a charged passage of play.

The confrontation unfolded late in the evening session as fading light and rising tension framed a crucial phase of the match. After conceding consecutive boundaries to Travis Head, Stokes exchanged words with Labuschagne at the end of an over, with stump microphones capturing the England skipper telling the batter to “shut the f*** up.” Stokes then walked toward Labuschagne and briefly put an arm around him as umpires moved in to calm the situation.

While the exchange drew attention, it was viewed as minor within the context of a hard fought Test and is not expected to result in any formal sanction. Match officials intervened quickly, and the incident fell well short of the threshold typically required for disciplinary action under the game’s code of conduct.

There was an immediate cricketing response. Five balls into his next over, Stokes tempted Labuschagne into driving away from his body, inducing a thick outside edge that was safely taken at gully. Labuschagne departed for 48, ending a brisk partnership with Head and giving Stokes the last word in the encounter.

Australia reached stumps at 166 for two, still trailing England by more than 200 runs, with Head unbeaten on 91 and nightwatcher Michael Neser seeing out the final overs. Head’s counterattacking innings kept the hosts in contention after England earlier posted 384, built around a commanding century from Joe Root.

Neser, who was unaware of the confrontation when he arrived at the crease, later suggested Labuschagne’s competitive nature often brings edge to contests, noting that the batter has a knack for getting under opponents’ skin.

The flashpoint added to the intensity of a match already rich in momentum shifts, but officials and players alike treated it as part of the emotional ebb and flow of a high stakes Ashes Test rather than a disciplinary issue.
