The Baltimore Ravens have named Jesse Minter as their new head coach, turning to a familiar face with deep organizational ties following the dismissal of longtime coach John Harbaugh.
Minter, 42, joins the Ravens on a five year contract after serving as defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers. He replaces Harbaugh, who was fired earlier this month after Baltimore failed to reach the playoffs, ending an 18 season tenure marked by sustained regular season success and a Super Bowl title.
The hire marks a homecoming for Minter, who previously worked in Baltimore from 2017 to 2020 as a defensive assistant and defensive backs coach. During that span, he was part of coaching staffs that helped maintain the Ravens’ long standing defensive identity.
In recent seasons, Minter has gained league wide recognition for his defensive work. With the Chargers, his units were among the NFL’s most efficient, including a league best performance in points allowed during the 2024 season. His defensive approach emphasizes adaptability, communication, and situational discipline.
Ravens management described Minter as a strong leader with a sharp football mind, citing his ability to connect with players and maximize talent. The organization believes his familiarity with its culture will allow for a smoother transition and immediate impact.
One of Minter’s primary challenges will be guiding quarterback Lamar Jackson and a roster built to contend deep into January. Despite strong regular season results in recent years, Baltimore has struggled to translate that success into consistent postseason wins, a gap ownership now expects to close.
Minter becomes only the fourth head coach in franchise history and the youngest to hold the position. His appointment reinforces the Ravens’ preference for stability, having employed just two head coaches over the previous 27 seasons, both of whom won Super Bowls early in their tenures.
Baltimore’s decision comes amid a busy NFL coaching cycle that has seen several franchises opt for defensive minded leadership. With expectations high and a championship caliber roster in place, Minter steps into one of the league’s most demanding roles with immediate pressure to deliver results.
