Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apologized following widespread backlash over comments he made about immigration in the United Kingdom.
Ratcliffe, founder and chairman of the chemicals group INEOS, said he was sorry that his “choice of language” had offended people after describing the UK as being “colonised by immigrants” during remarks at an industry summit. He said his intention was to highlight the importance of well-managed immigration policies that support economic growth, jobs, and skills development.
The comments triggered strong political and public reactions. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the remarks were “offensive and wrong,” emphasizing that Britain is a diverse country shaped by migration. Supporter groups associated with Manchester United also expressed concern, stating that football leadership should promote inclusion and unity among fans of all backgrounds.
Football authorities indicated they would review whether the comments breached standards related to conduct within the sport, while anti-racism organizations warned that such language risks reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Ratcliffe, who purchased a minority stake in Manchester United in 2023 and oversees football operations through INEOS, said his broader message was that governments must balance immigration with investment in domestic industry and workforce skills to ensure long-term economic prosperity. He reiterated his apology, stating that open debate on national policy challenges should be conducted responsibly and respectfully.
