Afghanistan veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Afghanistan’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group D clash against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
According to the International Cricket Council, Nabi violated Article 2.4 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to disobeying an umpire’s instruction during an international match. The incident occurred at the start of the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings when Nabi was involved in a prolonged discussion with on-field officials regarding South African pacer Lungi Ngidi’s wristband.
In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to Nabi’s disciplinary record, marking his first offence within a 24-month period. Nabi admitted the breach and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
The disciplinary action followed one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament, where Afghanistan suffered a heartbreaking defeat to South Africa national cricket team after the contest was decided in a second Super Over. The loss significantly dented Afghanistan’s hopes of advancing to the Super 8 stage for a second consecutive edition.
Despite strong performances from Afghanistan’s batting unit, including aggressive middle-overs scoring, South Africa held their nerve in the decisive moments to secure victory, leaving Afghanistan facing an uphill challenge in the remainder of their campaign.
