Ishan Kishan Leads India to 61-Run Win Over Pakistan, Seal Super 8 Spot

Ishan Kishan’s 40-ball 77 and a clinical four-pronged bowling effort helped India defeat Pakistan by 61 runs in Colombo, confirming their place in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 round.

Colombo, Sri Lanka: A roaring crowd of more than 32,000 spectators at the R. Premadasa Stadium witnessed India deliver a commanding all-round performance against arch-rivals Pakistan, sealing a 61-run victory that guaranteed their progression to the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Batting first on a slightly tacky surface, India overcame an early setback when Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck, but wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan quickly shifted the momentum. Playing with controlled aggression, the left-hander hammered 77 runs from just 40 deliveries, striking 10 fours and three sixes while anchoring an 86-run partnership with Tilak Varma that stabilized the innings.

Kishan’s knock also set a new benchmark, surpassing a long-standing Indian left-handed T20I record against Pakistan previously held since 2007. “It is easy to say this is just another game, but this is a high-stakes contest,” India captain Suryakumar Yadav said after the match, praising the team’s composure under pressure.

India finished at 175 for 7, with Yadav adding 32 runs and Shivam Dube providing late acceleration through a brisk 27 from 17 balls. Pakistan’s bowling effort saw occasional breakthroughs, but the total proved challenging on a slowing Colombo pitch.

The run chase never gained traction as Pakistan lost three wickets within the first two overs, slipping to 13 for 3 after early strikes from Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Axar Patel then removed Babar Azam during the powerplay, tightening India’s grip on the contest.

Although Usman Khan attempted a recovery with a determined 44-run knock, Pakistan’s middle order collapsed under sustained pressure. Bumrah, Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each, bowling Pakistan out for 114 and completing one of India’s most convincing victories of the tournament.

Pakistan must now win their final group match against Namibia to keep qualification hopes alive, while India head into the Super 8 stage with three consecutive victories and growing tournament momentum.

Why this matters now:
The emphatic win not only strengthens India’s title credentials but also reshapes the Group A qualification battle, placing Pakistan in a must-win situation in their final league fixture.
