Former US President Donald Trump has said American forces carried out a large-scale operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, according to statements made during a press conference and posts on Truth Social.
Trump claimed the operation involved coordination between US military units and law enforcement agencies and said the Venezuelan leader was taken into custody during a nighttime raid. He also presented images that he said showed Maduro after his capture.
There has been no independent confirmation from the Venezuelan government regarding Maduro’s status.
Trump Details Operation
Trump said the operation involved air, sea, and ground elements and described it as the result of months of planning. He claimed there were no US f*talities, though some personnel were injured.
“This operation was done in conjunction with US law enforcement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the mission was carried out with what he described as precision and speed.
US Officials React
Senior US officials echoed Trump’s claims.
The Deputy Secretary of State described the moment as a “new dawn” for Venezuela, while the US Attorney General said Maduro and his wife face indictments in New York on drug and weapons-related charges.
Trump said the pair would be transported to the United States to face legal proceedings.
Venezuela Responds
Venezuelan authorities have not confirmed Maduro’s capture.
The country’s vice president demanded proof of life, while the defense minister accused the United States of carrying out aggressive military actions and warned of resistance. Venezuela has also requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Regional and Global Reaction
Several regional leaders have expressed concern over sovereignty and stability in Latin America. International observers are calling for restraint as details remain unclear.
Analysts say uncertainty surrounding Venezuela’s leadership could have short-term implications for global oil markets, though production facilities have not reported major disruptions.
