The world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, delivered his annual forecast early Monday morning, predicting six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney.
Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, dressed in black coats and top hats, summoned Phil from his burrow shortly after sunrise and announced the result to a crowd that gathered in freezing temperatures before dawn.
The 2026 ceremony marked the 140th time Phil has made a seasonal prediction since the tradition began in 1887. Festivities included live entertainment and fireworks, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the small town of about 6,000 residents.
Local officials said the event provides a major economic boost each year, with attendance swelling to between 20,000 and 30,000 people. Hotels, restaurants, and shops reported strong business tied to the annual celebration.
While Phil’s forecast is rooted in folklore rather than science, the tradition remains a cultural symbol of winter in the United States. Meteorologists note that the groundhog’s predictions are ceremonial, but the event continues to attract global attention and media coverage.
Despite the forecast of extended winter, the Groundhog Day ritual once again offered humor and unity for attendees, who embraced the moment as part of a uniquely American seasonal custom.
