Arizona investigators believe Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, was forcibly taken from her home outside Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said Guthrie’s residence is now being treated as a crime scene after evidence suggested she did not leave voluntarily. Authorities believe she may have been removed during the night.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen late Saturday evening at her home. Officials said she has limited mobility and requires daily medication, warning that missing doses could be life threatening. Investigators emphasized that she does not suffer from cognitive impairment and is described as mentally sharp.
Her family reported her missing on Sunday, triggering a large scale search involving law enforcement officers, volunteers, drones, helicopters, aircraft, and search dogs. Units from US Customs and Border Protection have also assisted in the effort.
Nanos said investigators observed concerning signs at the home but declined to release specific details. He added that there is no indication Guthrie left willingly and that authorities believe she was harmed when taken.
Law enforcement is reviewing security camera footage from the area and has asked neighbors to check doorbell and home surveillance systems for any recordings from Saturday night.
On Monday’s broadcast of the TODAY show, co anchors addressed the situation and asked viewers to support the family. In a statement shared publicly, Savannah Guthrie thanked the community for its concern and urged anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
“Our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said, asking for prayers and continued support as the search continues.
Officials said there is no known threat connected to Guthrie’s work in television, and the FBI has been notified of the case as investigators pursue all leads.
