Trump Revokes EPA Climate Pollution Authority, Legal Fight Looms

The Trump administration has repealed a major EPA rule that enabled federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, triggering legal challenges that could determine the future of US climate policy for years.

The Trump administration has finalized a sweeping rollback of US climate policy by revoking the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 “endangerment finding,” a landmark determination that greenhouse gases threaten public health and therefore can be regulated under the Clean Air Act.

The decision removes one of the federal government’s most important legal foundations for limiting emissions from vehicles, power plants, and oil and gas operations. Officials also confirmed plans to repeal several vehicle emissions standards that were built on the original finding.

President Donald Trump described the repeal as a major deregulation move, arguing that earlier administrations had exceeded their legal authority by using the Clean Air Act to address global climate change. EPA leadership said the agency lacks statutory authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions without explicit congressional authorization.

Legal experts expect the decision to face immediate court challenges from environmental organizations, public health groups, and several US states. Previous Supreme Court rulings have affirmed the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases, though recent decisions have narrowed how broadly federal agencies can implement major regulatory programs.

If courts ultimately uphold the repeal, analysts say future administrations could find it far more difficult to impose nationwide climate regulations through existing environmental laws. The legal battle is expected to take years and could eventually reach the US Supreme Court, making the outcome a defining moment for the direction of US climate policy and global climate regulation efforts.
