Athens, Georgia: As winter begins to ease across North Georgia, restaurants in Athens are leaning into brighter flavors, drink specials and crowd-friendly promotions ahead of National Margarita Day on Feb. 22.

Local patios and bars are expected to fill early Sunday, particularly downtown where Paloma Park on West Washington Street is offering draft margarita towers for $30 beginning at noon. The restaurant is also featuring $5 Espolón house margaritas and $8 pitchers during happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

La Parrilla Mexican Restaurant on Alps Road is joining the celebration with a $9.25 margarita special for guests marking the holiday. Staff at several venues say they anticipate strong walk-in traffic, especially from student groups and weekend visitors.

“National Margarita Day always brings energy into the room,” one downtown server said Friday afternoon while prepping bar stations. “People come in ready to celebrate.”

Spring flavors take center stage

Beyond the cocktail promotions, several Athens restaurants are rolling out limited-time spring menus.

Newk’s Eatery is running a refreshed lineup through May 13, featuring an Asian Chicken Salad with edamame and mandarin oranges, a Tuna Salad Sandwich layered with bread-and-butter pickles and melted provolone, and a Chipotle Shrimp Caesar Wrap served in a spinach tortilla. A customizable Trio plate allows guests to select three sides, ranging from chicken salad to pasta salad.

On South Milledge Avenue, The Pine Bar has resumed weekend brunch after a three month hiatus. Service runs Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with bowls, beignets and sparkling drinks returning to the menu.

Meanwhile, Bruxie on East Broad Street is keeping its February specials available through the end of the month, including a Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Shake and its themed waffle sandwich offering.

Expect busy dining rooms

With National Margarita Day falling on a Sunday this year, restaurants expect extended afternoon traffic as groups linger over pitchers and towers. Larger-format drink specials typically encourage longer table times and additional food orders, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

As spring approaches, more seasonal swaps and limited-run menu announcements are expected in the coming weeks, signaling a shift from winter comfort plates to lighter, produce-forward dishes across Athens dining rooms.
