MEXICO CITY: U.S. officials issued an urgent security alert Sunday warning American citizens in several Mexican states to shelter in place as cartel related violence and road blockages disrupted parts of the country.

The advisory, released by the U.S. Mission in Mexico, affects wide areas including Jalisco, Baja California and Quintana Roo, covering major tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Cancun and Tulum.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, has long been one of the most wanted cartel leaders.

The warning comes amid heightened tensions following reports surrounding cartel figure Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities have not publicly detailed the full operational picture, but security activity and criminal disruptions have prompted precautionary measures.

According to the embassy notice, all U.S. government personnel at the Consulate General in Tijuana and staff in Guerrero, Michoacan and Quintana Roo were directed to shelter in place. Personnel in Monterrey were instructed to remain within the metropolitan area.

Travel disruptions reported

While airports remain open, officials confirmed that road blockages have begun affecting airline operations. Some domestic and international flights in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were cancelled, and all taxis and ride share services were suspended in Puerto Vallarta.

Local reports also indicated that some businesses temporarily halted operations as security forces responded to unfolding incidents across multiple states.

The advisory has raised fresh concern among travelers planning trips to popular destinations including Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Guadalajara, as authorities continue monitoring cartel related disruptions.

What Americans in Mexico are being told

U.S. officials urged citizens currently in affected areas to take immediate precautions. Guidance includes remaining inside homes or hotels, avoiding areas with visible law enforcement activity, and closely monitoring local media for updates.

Officials also advised Americans to avoid crowds, maintain contact with family members and follow instructions from local authorities. Emergency assistance remains available through U.S. embassy and consular channels.

Situation remains fluid

Mexican authorities have not announced widespread airport closures, but the security environment remains dynamic in several regions. Travel experts note that conditions can change quickly when cartel activity triggers localized disruptions.

For now, the U.S. government says the shelter advisory is precautionary while security operations continue across parts of the country.
