  • Prosecutors allege husband was poisoned with fentanyl

  • Defense says there is zero proof she administered the drug

Park City, Utah: The murder trial of Utah mother and children’s book author Kouri Richins is underway, nearly four years after her husband was found dead in the couple’s bedroom from what authorities say was a massive fentanyl overdose.

Richins, 35, has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, insurance fraud, and forgery. If convicted on the most serious count, she could face life in prison.

Prosecutors allege Richins poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, to gain access to his money and start a new life. During opening statements, chief prosecutor Bradley Bloodworth told jurors the evidence would show the killing was financially motivated.

“She needed Eric Richins’ money to have her fresh start at life,” Bloodworth said in court.

What prosecutors allege

According to court filings, Eric Richins, 39, died on March 4, 2022, after ingesting what the medical examiner determined was five times the lethal dose of fentanyl. Investigators say the drug was illicit and taken orally.

Prosecutors also pointed to the couple’s finances, telling the jury that Richins allegedly carried significant debt while her husband’s estate was valued at about $4 million and insured for more than $2 million.

Authorities further claim there were earlier attempts to poison Eric Richins, including a Valentine’s Day 2022 incident in which he reportedly broke out in hives after eating food his wife prepared.

Defense pushes back

Defense attorney Kathryn Nester told jurors there is no direct evidence proving how fentanyl entered Eric Richins’ system.

“What you will never hear, after four years of investigation, is how that fentanyl got inside of him because there is zero evidence of that,” she argued.

The defense also highlighted Richins’ emotional 911 call the night of her husband’s death, portraying her as a grieving spouse rather than a suspect.

The book that drew national attention

The case drew widespread public interest after Richins published a children’s book titled “Are You With Me?” roughly a year after her husband’s death. She said at the time the book was meant to help her three sons cope with grief.

Prosecutors arrested her in May 2023, weeks after she promoted the book in local media.

Investigation and next steps

Court documents show investigators examined phone searches, financial records, and alleged fentanyl purchases tied to the case. Prosecutors are also seeking to introduce a jailhouse letter they say suggests an attempt to influence testimony.

Richins has repeatedly denied involvement, previously saying she is eager to prove her innocence.

The high profile trial in Summit County is expected to continue in the coming weeks as jurors hear testimony from investigators, medical experts, and family members.
