LOS ANGELES: Federal investigators executed search warrants Wednesday at the home and office of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, escalating scrutiny around the nation’s second-largest school system.

The FBI confirmed agents were carrying out court-authorized searches but declined to specify the nature of the investigation or whether Carvalho himself is a target. Justice Department officials also acknowledged the warrants while keeping supporting affidavits sealed.

Television footage from the San Pedro neighborhood showed multiple agents entering and leaving the residence with boxes, while district sources said some employees were evacuated from LAUSD’s downtown administrative offices during the operation.

Carvalho, who has led the district since February 2022, had not issued a public statement as of Wednesday afternoon. District officials likewise did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The probe comes at a sensitive moment for LAUSD, which serves more than 500,000 students across Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The district has recently faced budget pressures and legal challenges, including a dispute over the use of Proposition 28 arts funding.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and cautioned that no conclusions should be drawn from the searches alone. It is not yet clear whether additional locations are involved or if any charges are expected.

More information is expected as federal officials review evidence collected during the searches.
