Islamabad: A high-level Iranian delegation has arrived in Pakistan’s capital as diplomatic efforts intensify, with new statements from US President Donald Trump raising the stakes ahead of expected negotiations.

The delegation, led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, includes Abbas Araghchi and senior officials from Iran’s defence and economic leadership.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the delegation was received in Islamabad by Ishaq Dar, Asim Munir, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Mohsin Naqvi.

Officials said Pakistan hopes all parties will engage constructively and reiterated its role in facilitating a lasting resolution to the conflict.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment, as both sides move toward formal negotiations following a temporary ceasefire agreement brokered through Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

Behind the scenes, Pakistan also carried out an unusually high-level security operation to ensure the delegation’s safe passage. According to flight tracking data, Pakistan Air Force fighter jets, including JF-17 and F-16 aircraft, were positioned near Iran’s Bandar Abbas to escort the Iranian aircraft to Islamabad. The mission was supported by aerial refuelling tankers and airborne surveillance systems, maintaining continuous monitoring across the corridor amid heightened regional tensions.

Trump Signals Hard Line Ahead of Talks

As the delegation arrived, Trump delivered a series of strong statements outlining his expectations from any deal with Iran.

He said a successful agreement must ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon, calling it the central condition for any long-term settlement.

Trump also claimed that Iran had been “militarily defeated,” while adding that the outcome of talks would determine the next phase of the situation.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Flashpoint

The US president made it clear that control over the Strait of Hormuz remains a non-negotiable issue.

He warned that the United States would not allow Iran to impose tolls on ships passing through the waterway and insisted that the strait would be reopened regardless of Tehran’s position.

“We’ll open up the strait with or without them,” Trump said, signaling the possibility of unilateral action if negotiations fail.
